Playing as Turkey,i started by destroying my closest neighbour,Greece. After taking their cities,i take the independent cities around me.I convert to Islam, maybe a bit too soon as i then border the Hindu or Buddhist India. So they hate me.Arabia to the south borders me aswell, and soon i surround them from the north and the west.Getting my massive army,i declare war on them and take one of thier cities.I send one of my smaller armies to thier city with a longbowmen and a galleon. My Jannisaires and cannon start healing in the city they took over.Next turn,I have a massive Camel Archer stack attacking the city i recently took over. The one with the injured Jannisairies and cannons.I lose them all.And the city.

The post above me show one of the most terrible military defeat of "space" and "enter". They were utterly crushed.

And if you build a fort on oil before you get Combustion, you'll be able to use the oil the instant that you get the tech, instead of waiting the time it takes to build the wells. ;)

Actually forts almost stand for town replacement. Almost... {part of the game code: kImprovement.isActsAsCity() )

the year was like 1000 bc or something it was an early attack, I had about 40 roman preatorians (swordsman), my main units, and I decided to cause a world war since I was the only prepared, in the city where I had iron I decided that I didnt want to be pillaged/ deprived of my resources so I split my uints up around the border of the city this made the me go from a stack of 15 to hold 2 (except for one), the AI sent out an axemen the only real threat for the square grid of one unit in it, it failed but this was a world war and my only ally was japan against 5 more civilizations. The first axeman failed... then the next... then the next... and after a while they broke through which wasnt a problem, the axeman was still 2 squares away I think, but then some thing remarkable happened japan turned on me... I had nothing to do but to create a whole new battle plan, I pillaged my own improvements and used the money to make a last unit, a longbowman, then I started winning again but you know, I made my military city starve itself for a few years...

Haha... ya, grammar never stood a chance vs internet forums.

Most of my big defeats are nuke related, generally retaliatory. The principle of mutually assured destruction never took into account that, if all else fails, somebody eventually wins by score. If i was Gorbechev i would have nuked all americas cities and tried to hang on till 2050.

Am I the only one who ban all nukes ASAP?

    In my early days...

I sent a whole stack of Modern Armors against some AI with only Machineguns and Artillery, expecting a rapid slaughter. And slaughter it was : you wouldn't believe how fast artillery and whatever can destroy a stack of MA. It was my first lesson on collateral damage.

And I once sent a whole stack of destroyers against someone who only had caravels as far as I could tell. Caravels and airships, that is. Those damned mosquitos (he had like a bazillion of them) damaged my shiny fleet so much that all my destroyers were actually sunk by freaking caravels !

Nowadays, I never, ever send a fleet without a carrier if the enemy has air capacity, and I always separate my forces in several stacks during an invasion, just in case.

That's why your boats can get through them and you can garrison planes on them. Very handy.

I ban nukes, but not until I have amassed a goodly stack of them!

No such thing as too much nukes, who would ban the most godly collateral damage in the game. Besides, SDI and a large fleet of anti-submarine units (those that can see them really) will make you nigh impervious to retaliatory nuke strikes.

I just had my worst disaster 5 minutes ago. Roosevelt launched his spaceship a few turns before I completed my, but I had an epic invasion force ready at his capital. 160 land units (modern armor ++) on 40 transports and a bunch of escorting vessels and jet fighters. About 250 units in all. It was my only chance, but as I feared, he went ahead and nuked them to smithereens. Every single unit was killed within ONE turn. No SDI yet, and nukes aren't banned because nobody has received enough votes to get elected for UN office. Haven't been very diplomatic this game, even though I was planning to. Wows to be diplomatic always fail for me....

On the bright side, I nuked Seattle as revenge (I razed Washington earlier in the game to slow down Roosevelt, but not enough).

I ban nukes when I'm leading. Preferably after having built some already. Mwahaha.

If I'm trailing, I try to keep all options open.

Depends if anyone else has them. My experience is that if some AIs have nukes and some don't, those with will vote to ban, and the others will vote against the ban.

Stupid Hatty once voted to ban nukes when she had 1 Tac-Nuke, and I had about 2 dozen ICBMS and a dozen Tacs.

I have yet to see nukes used in a BtS game. Ever. If you build UN before anyone finishes Manhattan Project then no one has nukes and the AI's will vote for the ban unanimously. Even if an AI is UN Sec General they will propose the ban under those circumstances.

I play BtS and believe me, nukes get used. Then again, I seldom prioritize the UN.

Oh yes. There are any number of posts regarding decimated stacks through the use of our friend, the atom. As an Old Guy who went to elementary school in the duck-and-cover 1950's I think that I just have a learned aversion to nukes.
