When do you choose your VC?

Or do you happen into it, rather than choose it?

My first (and only) playthroughs were all predetermined because I wanted to experience the 4 different VCs (didnt do Time of course).

Now that I'm starting Civ back up, I'm just trying to raise the difficulty and not have a pre-determined VC strategy in place to spice things up. Problem is, I never know what I should be focusing on in the early game. I need some sort of military due to playing on Emperor/Immortal, but now I'm ignoring Culture/Tourism. If I maybe try to get my culture up, I'm shortchanging my beakers, etc, etc.

Do most people have a pre-determined VC in mind? Or do most players on the higher difficulties know within the first couple of turns (and meeting other civs), what VCs are obtainable? It seems like having to shift from one VC to another at Turn 100+ is game over...

    Thanks

I normally plan my VC before I start but I always think of a back up!

why not try time? It's more challenging than one might think. You know only need the highest score, but you need to prevent any other civ from fulfilling a victory condition. It means you need a well-balanced civ, to be ahead in tech, culture, have a decent size population, and be strong enough to decapitate the top two or three other civs so they can't win. Try setting a goal of winning a time game, it's more interesting than many think.

Re; your first question, I pick a VC depending on the civ/map/speed. However, it's liable to change based on game circumstances.

At start when I choose my civ or discover the random civ.
Sometimes I drop it around T200, when I think switch allow me to save time or if my original goal is a bad plan.
Usually, I change CVor SV to Domination. Really peaceful game are harder, since last pacth, mainly CV (except Sacred Rites strategies).
At T240/250, I know if I really win.

I push science hard while also building the guilds and running those (food cargo ships to keep all these specialists fed), then when I hit an ideology, before doing so I look at where I am for Cultural, Diplomatic, and Science and then choose what victory condition I think is fastest at that point while I'm picking the ideology.

If domination, I generally decide before the game even starts. I generally prefer to play peacefully, and so a domination game would be a change-of-pace where I pick Zulu or something and never consider other VCs.

If peaceful, I start out going for culture until the Renaissance. It's my first choice VC, and the early strategy is pretty close to a science game anyway, just with earlier guilds. If I get the Renaissance wonders I want, I proceed towards culture victory. If I don't get the wonders, I shift to either science or diplo depending on the situation. Since you are stockpiling GS anyway it's not a hard shift to make, just some changes in tech path.

I been playing on shuffle world, random leader for me.
And I generally have to figure out what type of world i am on, who i am by.

So far i keep getting many small land masses, with lots of water.
    - One game I went for dom victory and just use mass carriers with bombers to get the capitals.
    - Another I was going for culture win, but ended up winning based on timer/score.
    - And the one i am currently playing, I kinda was aiming for culture, but another race has a HUGE amount of culture that i can't beat with my tourism, since i have all 13 CS in love with me, i may switch it up to a UN win. I haven't done one of those in CIV5 yet.

hehe- I think all of us civ players have our obsessive/compulsive tendencies when playing. Mine deal with victory conditions. I compulsively:
-play games in "rounds" of 4: I have to win a domination, a diplomatic, a space race, and a culture victory before duplicating any single victory condition.
-to remain flexible in gameplay and to help differentiate my victories in my personal HoF, I have to win all 4 victory conditions with any given civ on a particular map type before moving on to a different map type, without repeating.
-to avoid becoming too acclimated to any given civ's advantages, I don't play any given civ within 8 games of the previous time I played that civ.

@Culturemaniac: I don't play time victories because they're the hardest, the least rewarding, and BY FAR the most tedious. With the exception of about 10% of my culture games and about half of my Venice games, I always win pre-turn 300, immortal diff. As turn time incurs an exponential increase starting around turn 225, It would take several times as long to win a time victory, and you don't have an accomplishment to show for it; it's not really a victory, more of a default place-leading when noone achieves victory. And at immortal, you'd have to prevent every other civ from achieving several or all victory types within the 500 turns.

I decide before the game even starts if I'm going Domination. Otherwise, it's always a late game decision for me. I focus on food and science first to try and get the tech lead. Then it's just a matter of determining if I can get the tourism to win a culture victory, the gold to win a diplomatic victory, or the science to win a space race. It usually gets decided for good when I get to my third-tier ideology tenets.
