I have seen many threads about AI leaders declare at pleased, friendly etc... But when do YOU declare war at? Do you declare war to your friends? or your pleased neighbors?

Actually I am a bit naive so I don't declare war at pleased, so I end up in a small island with only a few cities at hand and last at every score... So no one kills me but I end up being in a great agony trying hard to survive...

But I have friends, right Monty?

I don't declare om my friends, but then again I rate my friends not on what they think of me but for what I think of them.

I declare when someone has what I want. If they are friendly to me I will hold off declareing until I have noone else close by that makes sense warring with. Then again I do play very aggressively and I usually only have 2-3 Ai's with friendly/pleased.

I kill my neighbours i dont really care if they are friendly mostly i will end in the top 3 in score i play monarch difficult.

For me its all about who, and how the lay of the land looks. But I aspire to declare at the warmongers(if one should be me neighbour) as soon as possible....he will only become a greater threat the longer the game goes on.

I tend to play fairly peaceful games, so I only attack those who are likely to become a major threat to me.

I care little about relations in that respect. Of course there is a need to keep an eye on diplomacy. Is there even a score in the game that tells me what I think of an AI? I do not think I ever saw this, the relations you can see is what the AI thinks of me, not the other way around.

Anyway, I will declare on any one as long as there is something to gain. It matters little if this is a friend or not or what this friend thinks of me.

No there is not a figure tells how YOU feel about the AI... I was only curious if you would attack AI if the relations with them are good...

Sure, if the AI might win culture I will raze all his culture cities no matter if he has -10 relations or +50.

OT: I remember my first ever emperor game... I had no idea how to wage war properly or how to tell if I could hold cities or not. I build a huge invading force and went to the other continent. The leader in tech and score was friendly with me, but I declared regardless. Now I could easely have taken over his cities but me being a noob I razed all but a few, then I took peace for techs and declared on the next AI... In the end I razed maybe 30 cities that game, I laid waste to all my friends on the other continent just so I could run away with a space race win!

I never declare at pleased, unfortunately for the AI for me to be pleased with them they have to always be willing to trade with me and need to be not in the way of me getting a domination victory. If I feel like a conquest then they are just plain out of luck.

Depends. It makes sense to have friends to trade with and mutual enemies to declare upon but sometimes a friend is just a big a threat as they stand by teching like mad while I battle someone else into extinction. Ultimately I want to win, so they may end up feeling the brunt of my military might if they are looking too strong or have nice land nearby or are culturally pressuring my cities.

I won't often declare war on friendly AIs. Mostly because if I made the effort to get friendly relations, I wasn't planning to DoW on them anyway. I certainly will DoW on pleased AIs if it suits my strategy.

Sometimes. But only if I have a very good reason to declare war.

Once i played a game (Noble) with hemispheres and 6 continents. Then I fell on the continent as Hatshepsut. She was pleased at once. She founded Judaism, and I converted to it. I also adopted Organized religion (her favorite civic). I also gave her some technologies. Then i had 8+ relations from religion, 6+ relations from civic, 2+ relations from open borders, 4+ relations from trade, 4+ relations from sharing discoveries with her, and 3+ relations from giving her help. Then she settled on a strategic important place for me, and I had a lot of offensive troops. Then I declared war on her, and she kept being Friendly and kept smiling. After that she got some war weariness, she didn't refuse to talk, and said such things as, "What can I do for you?", "What may humble Egypt do for mighty Rome" and "Hello, Augustus Caesar. How honored you must be to see me once more". :)

I'll declare war regardless of my relations. Frequently I'll declare war on a Friendly/Pleased AI to make them a vassal. If I am going for a domination/conquest victory, all AIs are targets.

The more I read the posts the more I feel like an idiot, never declare war on pleased :) I feel like betraying the AI so I dont declare unless I am provoked...

No wonder I never get past noble :D

relations have nothing to do with it. or very little. i basically plan on continually expanding my empire until its big enough to win a space race. therefore i declare war on my weakest and closet neighbors and keep doing so until i have all the land i want. then i boost defences. i also rarely declare war if the ai asks me to, only if its a really weak person of a differnt religion. so im saying for my strategy i dont care about relations at all i simply attack the closest and weakest neighbor once i have the troops ready. it also might be a good idea to take down a strong neighbor early on if u know u have the troops. they can become much more bothersome later on.

I declare war on my neighbours as soon as I feel I have a reasonable chance of winning, with total disregard for their feelings towards me.
Warmonger ? Me ?? I'll kill anyone who says that !

I know, but I just cant get rid of the feeling that I am betraying them and feel bad about it :)

poor me :)

I'll never declare on someone who is friendly. Ever. Pleased? It depends on whether or not the AI in question declares at pleased. I don't care if it's Shaka, or Genghis, or Ragnar or Monty or any other warmonger. I declare on them regardless of what they think about me.

I'll declare on anyone if it helps me win. I do show minor amounts of restraint, however, when I realize that I can get a civ to vote me UN or AP winner w/o attacking them. I also save AIs at dispositions where they won't declare for last usually.
