Finally we find the poll without biased options
But yes, it seems we need two seperated options of "I will pre-order but not yet" and "I will buy it day 1 or later soon", more clear than "Day 1 or close to it".
Why buy now when get on sale later? It's not like I have a dearth of games to play in the meantime, and right now I'm really enjoying Millennia, even though it barely runs on my laptop
I'm not really following the game nowadays. I might buy it around launch, but before I make that decision it would be nice to have a couple non-marketers to do a summary of the significant good additions/changes, and also of all the annoying stuff that's bound to be present as well.
I like keeping an eye at all the news that slowly reveal the game but i will not preorder this time(did that with Civ6). One could argue that the early days after release are pretty much us playtesting the game for Firaxis, but most importantly also paying more for it than others who are just willing to wait for the sale that will eventually come. This i find to be the most rational decision, but you never know. Maybe the coming reveals will make me want to play the game on day 1 (highly unlikely i think but i am open to it) and so preorder. Anyway its a win win situation either I get to enjoy an outstanding new CIV game right from the start or I get to enjoy a new CIV game later and also keep the wallet happy.
I'm going to propose to a family member that I would appreciate a pre-order for Christmas. If that does not succeed, I may order just before launch to get the bonus content. Or I may wait until later in 2025, after a patch or two.
I don't think a preorder is worth it, to be honest. Not because the game will be bad, but because it needs time to evolve in its final and elegant form. The first two DLC will arrive at their fullest when almost a year has passed from the launch date. Another year or even two will be needed for the game to feel enriched and varied enough with all these unique civilizations and leaders that it deserves. A total of three years is a lot of time. Modding capabilities will also take time to be available. Not to mention that it's overpriced at release for what we are offered.
I will try not to preorder, but nostalgia and boredom from nothing to play will hit me, so I will likely preorder a few days before release. I would suggest another voting option that summarises my feelings and presumably the feelings of others: I will try not to preorder, but it's Sid Meier's Civilization or I don't want to preorder, but I will a few days before release.

Despite all my concerns about the game, I expect to pre-order close to release if not before. It is civ after all, and I'm in a fortunate position where I can afford it. But it still baffles me that they have managed to kill my enthusiasm for the game so much that I haven't pre-ordered yet. Right upto the announcement video, I expected to pre-order the day it became available in the steam shop.
I voted "months" but "weeks" may be more accurate. I've only pre-ordered a game once, in 2013. Unless it's something that's likely to sell out, like an Oasis concert ticket, I don't see the benefit of pre-ordering. Better to let other people see how a game is at launch, read why they like or dislike it, and make a more informed decision. And it tends to take a week to a couple of months for reviews based on more than first impressions to arrive, unless the game in question has major problems at launch. But for VII, I'm expecting it's more of "do the mechanics jell together to form a fun overall experience, and is the civ-switching to jarring like it was in Humankind?"
Although if it weren't for civ switching, "Day 1 or close to it" would be my likely answer. Which would tie it for my earliest purchase of a Civ game with Civ IV, which I bought about a week after launch, and which remains the Civ game I was most excited about on release.
In the meantime, I have a few new games from the Sid Meier Humble Bundle to tide me over. Perhaps literally, in the case of the Rising Tide expansion for Beyond Earth.
