So I was playing, what was intended as, my last game on Noble before moving up. I was playing as Vicky from England, on Epic on a huge fractal map.
I had a pretty good starting position with plenty of hills and flood plains to the north. My starting location had plenty of forest so I chopped and slaved my way to getting workers and a couple of settlers out early. I ran into the Ottomons a little further north and expanded east, west and south to the coast meaning I only had one front.
I attacked the Ottomons early, taking a gamble, because I noticed their cities were fairly unprotected and made them capitulate. I moved further north and made Brennus capitulate which was swiftly followed by Shaka.
I played this game a little differently and didn't leave as big a garrison in my cities (after discussions on this forum) and I was able to run my science slider at 80%+ for most of the game and was making rapid advances in science. Also, I tried a new approach with great people and used two of them for golden ages. I also rushed the Taj Mahal! By this point I had a score more than double my nearest rival and had three vassals. Further exploration and map trading revealed the map was one big continent. I could either load up my ships with troops and attack my nearest non-vassal (Japan) or continue to march on the ground and attack Bismark. By this point I had three large armies with redcoats and cannons. The germans had longbows. After a short war I had taken 6 cities and their capital and they surrendered.
I saved the game, went to make food and considered my options. I was only about half way through to max possible turns. Should I go for a culture victory? Should I continue along my current path and go for domination?
All of this was taken out of my hands when I sat back down at the laptop with my food and pressed "enter". The game just stalled. I tried again... and again... but it just would not go past that turn...
Moral of the story: Huge maps are obviously not playable on my laptop!
