Now here's a really annoying BUG that I seem to have found in Conquests.

I've been playing a game, which for the first time EVER I am actually winning! - and am at about 200AD.

Just out of curiosity, I thought when I booted up this morning I would have a look at some features I've never explored, like the map editor and the multiplayer. So I clicked on multiplayer in the game's opening menu, and fiddled about with the email game type. I opened a game with only one player which ended immediately, and I seemed to only be able to exit it by selecting "Save and Quit". So I saved the damn game and got out and went back to my single player game in progress, loaded that and guess what? - ALL of the saves in the auto drawer have been deleted!!!

Since I rely mostly on these auto saves to continue playing I have lost HUNDREDS of years of progress! My most recent manual save is from 130BC, and I guess I should be thankful I've got at least that but I'm VERY annoyed to lose so much progress!

Not only that, but the useless email save I made has decided to overwrite my single player 4000BC autosave, so I will never be able to restart this game from the beginning. And this is the ONE time I've played Conquests where I got onto a good map, with lots of luxuries, iron, saltpeter and so on.

Firaxis' gamesave routine SUCKS.

You're kidding, right?

Nope. They're pretty strict about that here.

Sorry about your savegame though.

Hmmm... call me dumb? But what does profanity mean?

To tell the truth, it would be really helpful if there would be any kind of listing what's not allowed. Near impossible to understand if you are no native speaker and live in a saecularized country.

While some words are pretty obvious (though I think that Civ3 Barbarian tribe 'Ku****es' should make it through the filter ;) ), several words related to body regions or sexuality I wouldn't want to hear my children using seem to be fine.
OTOH, I'd hardly dare to type the word 'Bible'....

Okay, Chieftess, now that I'm back "on air" again let me respond to your post.

First of all, a sequence like "$%^&*" is not profanity is it simply gibberish! You may argue that in the context in which it appeared it was *implied* profanity but implied profanity is not ACTUAL profanity. So I did NOT break your forum rules - which I did in fact read before I posted.

I have never heard of anyone being banned anywhere for typing gibberish in the place of profanity, but it's your forum and you can run it as you like, however you could at least make it clear in your forum rules that IMPLIED profanity is just as verboten as ACTUAL.

Secondly, a three day ban for a newbie, on a first offence, on a reading of the forum rules he could not possibly have guessed at, is absurdly harsh in my view. What's wrong with a simple warning?

And thirdly, why is it that others on this forum can use transparent profanity like the word "crap" which appeared in a thread title just below mine, or the string "****" in place of profanity which implies exactly the same as "$%^&#", and not be banned or even have their posts edited? This seems remarkably inconsistent to me.

So just to clear things up before I make further posts, can I use **** in place of profanity, or words like "ass" (might be referring to a donkey, right) or "butt" (as in cigarette) or are these also considered profanity in the wrong context? Thanks for clearing that up for me.

And now finally a word about the subject of this thread. You said:
"it's a feature that a new game resets the autosaves". Well it didn't under version 1.00, maybe this is a new feature of 1.22? Secondly, there should be separate types of autosaves for separate types of game, ie single player should have its own save type, so should email and other multiplayer types - for the simple reason that you might be running more than one type of game at once. Every other game I've played does this, so there's no excuse for an email save overwriting a single player save IMO.

I hope they fix this, I'm not holding my breath but I will be taking MUCH more care when I start a new game of any type and I advise all others players to do the same!

Finally, why no delete button on the savegame menu? It should be there, you shouldn't have to quit back to the desktop and manually delete, it's laborious and easy to make a mistake.

1 - Thunderfall doesn't want you to use asteriks, or masked characters to fill in for swearing.

2 - If you think it's a bug, post it in the bug reports forum.

3 - You can put "winfilebox=1" (I think this is the correct notation) in your civilization3.ini file (or the conquests ini file). Open it like a normal file (it's a text file).

What does winfilebox=1 do?

Also, does anyone have the INI setting handy where I can set my screen resolution to a specific number?

Thanks!

using autosaves as THE method for archiving your games places an awful lot of faith in the unknown. anything thats created automatically in my view could be destroyed automatically. save your games. i archive games by calling my first game a1, a2, ... a20 lets say for 20 saved archives of one game. next game would be b1, b2 ... when i run out of letters i go to aa1 etc or i move them to a sub folder or something. i sometimes zip them up too. but it never occured to me that i would ever dare to rely on autosaves as if they were permanant.

what can i say but 3 days suspension from a forum is a minor slap on the wrist. i understand the frustration but in the end its not that big a deal. and i applaud the heavy moderation and enforcing of the cussing rules. it makes these forums very pleasant to read. at the very least it keeps most of the trollers away.

When you start a new game, then yes, all your auto-saves are deleted. So now you know to copy or move them some place else FIRST. Were they deleted into the recycler/trash??
While auto-saves are quick and you can set how many turns-worth are saved, they are large files. Normal saved-game files are slower to do by a few seconds, but compressed. Do a manual save when you are finished with a session.
