I don't see it in the CS screen or the AI screen.

Is it only available under certain circumstances?

I am allies with Florence and my three options are :

give gold
give unit
declare war

Maybe you don't have anyone else in the world left?

Here's what it should look like:
Spoiler :

Maybe a cs can only be pledged from a maximum number of civs? 2 maybe?

I think you are right..... someone else has pledged to protect them, but I don't know who.

I'll look on the diplomacy screen to see if the info is there.

Funny, I wouldn't mind someone else pledging to protect the same CS as me. 'Can't we all get along'.

When you can click it, its on the CS menu.
You have to have some influence with the CS, but there's some other restrictions.
But really I doubt it enters into AI consideration when their deciding who to send money to / or go to war with. It doesn't seem to give any influence points to pledge it either.

Something I've been wondering - does pledging to protect CS increases the likelihood of a DOW (especially by civ that has ill intentions towards your CS in first place)?

Has anyone ever had a problem when you have to keep clicking on "pledge to protect" every turn?

I played a game during the week where I was definitely their ally, and I had three city states where I had to keep clicking on "pledge to protect."

I was definitely their ally as I was receiving stuff from them, and I had Patronage completely filled out. I was their ally all the way. But I had to keep clicking "pledge to protect" every turn.

Pledges of Protection are rather a strange feature, if you have one of the Unofficial Patch/Vanilla Enhancer (which lists all Civs who pledged protection), and you observe what's going on you with the world (in vanilla game) you'll notice few things
- Pledges expire after a single turn
- Pledges appear WHEN you don't do it yourself (observed in Unoffical Patch/VanillaEnhancer)
- Every AI seems to pledge protection the moment they meet a new City State, yet you can only pledge once you reach a Friends status.

I'm pretty sure that there's also some proximity factor based on how close the City State is to neighboring AI's.

When they're close to AI's, I'm more likely to see the option to Pledge, but usually when they are far from an AI or there is another city state in between them and an AI, there is no option to Pledge even if I am allied.

Yea, the whole Pledge thing, liek I said, is finicky, weird..

But I have a feeling they might be fixing it in Gak, seeing as "Pledge" is one of the quests.

It may be like this on the vanilla game, but it certainly isn't on the VEM mod.I was playing a game on it and there was one cs that had so many civs protecting it that the list went off the city state diplomacy screen.
