First of all, excuse my english :)
I'm Catalan and i don't understand why Sid Meier don't put Spanish civilitzation in this cool game. I don't like Spain, but i have to admit that it was a very important civilitzation.
Oh my surprise when I see civilitzations like iroquois, zulus and more... it's strange.
Well, I'm think so, what do you think?
Adéu!!! (and sorry for my english other time, it's awful!!!)

May be because there are too mane european civs:
france, england, german, russia
others region have only 3 civs...

Well in this game it (Russia) is considered a european nation, after all most of civilized Russia falls in Europe.

Also, the Zulus fall under the middle east category although they are way out in Africa. Why?

Furthermore, the Egyptians is part of the Greco/Roman category when geographically they are in the middle east. Why?

Wow!
Russia is not european nation
Wow
It is your american anticommunistic propaganda make you think so??
It is not true
Because half of Europe (till Ural) is in Russia...

Wow!

Russia, sir was the backwards nation that just happens to be geographically part of Europe.

Culturally and technologically, Russia is no European nation for the better majority of Russia's existence.

a question for Anielewicz:
Would you mind and tell us what is your educational and cultural background? afterwards it would be clear is it worth speaking on the topic with you.

Russia, except for dark times of Mongol domination, has always been a european nation playing serious role in the history of europe. just get any book on Russian history from ancient times till nowadays and read the facts.

best regards
Pavel

It's very funny. Russia isn't a European country? Who said this is stupid, sorry but it's true.
Russia is one of the most important countries of Europe (and of the world), and his culture and tecnology is higuer than others European countries.
But it's curious, people who borns in USA is American (wow!!) but whot borns in Brazil, Mexico... is brazilian, mexican.... How can be too prepotents! USA is only a country (a big nation without culture but a big nation) not a continent. But this is the sad history, who rules the world, rules everything, the words too.
(Sorry for my english, I promise that i will learn soon ;) )

My wife (a German) pointed this out to me years ago and asked the same question. Why is someone from the USA an "American" when there are a score of countries on the American continents?

There are two reasons. The first is because of "common usage". Before we were the USA we were the "American colonies". Citizens over here were "American colonists" or just "Americans". This common usage never extended to our neighbors to the north and south who were colonized mainly by non-Anglo European countries.

The second is that after we took the name United States of America, it became the only appelation that really fit. Someone from Brazil is a Brazilian. A person from Canada is Canadian. What would you call someone from the United States of America? A "Unitedian"? A "USer"? No, the only thing that really works is "American".

So it's not pride or hubris or threats that give us the label. Just a combination of history and common sense.

Is Russia European? Asian? Where do they fall?

Russia is European for one simple, indisputable fact. The capitol of Russia--Moskva, or Moscow if you prefer--is definitely in Europe. Yes, much of civilized Russia is in Europe, but not all of it--Vladivastok to name one exception. Look to the capitol of Russia, and you will see it is in Europe! And granted, the two most major cities (at least from a non-Russian's point of view) are Moscow and Saint Petersburg, both in Europe, I don't dispute that--but the reason Russia is in Europe is simply because the capitol is in Europe.

One more question, more on the topic of Civ 3...why did they not follow proper English, and use "capital" for all forms of the word, even when discussing the "head" city of a civilization? That is clearly a "capitol", not "capital".

And for qualifications, since someone has asked that, I am studying Physics/Computer Science Emphasis AND the Russian language at Brigham Young University (one of the top 100 in the USA, whether you like it or not), and in my junior year starting January. No, I'm not going on emotional bias--I never realized just how fascinating Russia was until I decided to take a Russian class...and I dislike Communism VERY much (in real life, of course)...Russia is not Communist anymore. The USSR no longer exists to hate. At least give Russia (the REAL Russia) a fair shot--drop the bias! (Most Russians I know via the 'net disliked Communism also, by the way...and many Communist places regained their former names--Leningrad is back to Saint Petersburg, for example).

Yeah, communism is very bad idea
And it is bad that communistic rulers was in Russia and other countries about 70 years :-((
After the autodestroyng weapon-made plants our economics collapses
adn nobody know when Russia became industrious country as USA :(
May if in 1917 tzar dont leave the emperors throne...

I agree with what you said, and thank you for the post. I have a lot of respect for the growth between the US and Russia now, and only hope it will continue. We both seem to have the right men in for the job of our respective presidents. I only hope diplomatic relations in real life can continue to grow, even though Lincoln and Catherine are not in power still. Who knows--maybe Civ 7 will have W. Bush and Putin! ;)

I think Spanish would be important. More important that some of the civilizations in the game like Zulus. (I haven't even heard of them until I got the game. But you can blame my ****ed up school curriculum for that. I haven't had World Histroy since 5th grade.)

I have no idea why they would be excluded from the game. They were a strong nation hundreds of years ago, and their language will soon be spoken by more people in America than English.

Also,

The Iroquois were very important to put into the game. The were probally the strongest Native American tribe ever.

And if you speak of Native Americans in general, they were technically advanced in a few ways. They knew farming very well and many of the produce that is around today (corn, potatoes) is a hybrid of other types of plants bred by Native Americans.

The Iroquois were ruthless and a very strong civilization known partly for their use of horses. They were extremely dominant throughout America until the English came around.

But as for the Zulus, I have never heard a thing about them and know nothing about the Bablonians. (i know i spelled that wrong)

Also, I just thought of this one. (Sorry for posting again, I don't feel like editing and I want to get my post count up. :) )

The Huns would be a cool civilization to add. They could be Expansionist and Militaristic. They had control over a large portion of Asia. They also were blamed largely for taking down the Roman empire.

Their unique unit could be the Tarkan which was a cavalry unit.

Well considering all of Europe after the Dark Ages re-emerged during the Renaissance while Russia got left behind. And when Russia was trying to modernize, it was mostly on modernizing the military, the idea that a modern army would be better than modernizing the rest of the nation. Also note the serfdom roaming all over Russia, it is basically slavery. Russia still had serfs when most of Europe abolished slavery. When there was reforms by a monarch, it was usually cancelled by the suceeding monarch. Lets look at Czar Alexander II, whom empancipated the serfs, reforms in education and courts, and during his reign industrialization came to Russia plus foreign investment was booming. After his death, his son Alexander III basically undid all his father's work. Sorry, but a nation does not look backwards, it goes forward. How can a nation be even considered European when they are going back in time during a time where all of Europe was industrializing and gaining power? Where is the European spirit of progress? Pretty much most of Russia's existence was backwards. Russia can be compared with Turkey too, both nations whom were not taken seriously for a long time, sort of like the little brother of in the European arena. You have to much emphasis on the geography while forgetting the cultural influence.

Is Russia a part of Europe? I would say yes.

Russia's "core" is, and always has been, its western-most end -- the part that lies closest to Europe. The narrow strip of land lying between Russia's western borders and Moscow easily holds 50% of the nation's population. That is the heart of the nation, and it has been so from the days of Kievan Rus -- Russia's earliest recognizable predecessor (10th century).

Forget the vast areas to the east -- historically speaking, they're an afterthought. They were mostly annexed by the Russians in their 19th century drive eastwards. The western part of Russia, or that part which lies closest to Europe, has always been its cultural, industrial and demographic heart.

The way to determine what part of a continent a country is in, or is said to be in, is to look at where the capital is. Moscow is to the west of the Ural(sp:confused: ) mountains, the eastern edge of europe, Therefore it is considered a european country.

Also does anyone have a clue as to how many ppl live in European Russia opposed to Asian Russia?

But this is just what i have heard so i could be completely wrong? sorry if i am

Let just settle that Russia is a Eurasian nation. Not quite fully European, but neither Asian. For goodnessake, the Slavs in the Balkans are more European than the Russians.

well to my knowledge there are two main types of russians. The slavs who live in the european part, and the mongolian/slavs who live in the asian part, near siberia and south of it. So saying the slavs in the baltics are more european than those in russia is not true.

I was in russia last year around easter and believe me, they look very european. I didn't see one person that looked asian at all, aside from a few children in an orphanage(it was outreach work), in all of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and a town called Vladimir.

And a word of advice if you are traveling there on your own, make sure you have a couple hundred rubles to pay some police officers if you are traveling down the highways, and yes i am serious. Also be prepared to drive very offensively. well this is off topic now, sorry.
