The strategy that seems to get raved about most is the super growth strategy. I tried this strategy in a game a couple of nights ago but the strategy implies stopping at a certain number of cities and growing those number of cities. At the first attempt of pulling off this strategy I just could not fight off the expansionist urge.

On this site I can only find two real in depth strategy guides, super growth as mentioned above and another one which is aimed at the less experienced player. I am a good civ player beat deity about 75% of the time but I want to be a truly great player. Are there any definitive strategy guides for the perfect expansionistic game? I have picked up dribs and drabs from this forum but it is really hard remembering all the little tips and tricks when I am in the middle of a game.

Well I guess there is no real perfect strategy, but SGS can be improved and there will always be scope for more improvements.

If you don't mind looking at something with the name "Apolyton" on it, here is the basic guide in extreme expansionism called "ICS" for Infinite City Strategy/Sleaze/Sprawl (Choose your own S-word). I've never tried it, but I'm pretty sure this is the definitive guide.

Ugh that really is a sleazy tactic, who would want to play the game like that, I don't care even if it is a winner. Is there anything else Tim (or anyone else for that matter)?

That so called "ICS" strategy was written by beginners. I don't know why it's even called a strategy, don't pay attention to it. The funny thing is it's in the Apolyton Great library, a supposed collection of the "best" strategies anywhere. I think it's a joke, but you might find something useful there. ACtually I think everything on apolyton is a joke, but that's just me. Markus's super growth strategy works best on 1x1x on a medium map, ESPECIALLY when you're on islands, then you can do some damage. But if you're on a large land mass with lots of room to grow then I wouldn't use the SGS strategy. I myself never ever use it under any circumstance, I never stop building cities from the very beginning of the game.

Why cant people just develop their own damn style??????????????

Probably because there are just a few ideas that work well in MP.

I wouldn't exactly call DaveV a beginner.
ICS is a horrble monster. However,it probably is the best way to start. It works. It has weakness, just like any idea.

I've seen DaveV put down over 70 cities in 15 turns on 1x1,deity.Just incredible...but a fricken nightmare to take over a civ he has played

We must all strive for betterment. I have played civII for five years now I am probably as good as I am going to get on my own, there is nothing wrong with trying to improve my game. And if people should develop their own style then why are you reading a "strategy and tips" forum?
