I've just noticed that the Bureaucracy science bonus is cumulative rather than additive. I think that's going to make a huge difference to my overall strategy.

So what other bonuses out there are cumulative? Is there a general rule about civics, wonders and buildings all being seperately cumulative?

Bureaucracy doesn't give a science bonus, it gives a commerce and production bonus. By cumulative, I assume you mean the fact that the number of breakers on the whole of your capitol is being increased by 50%. This is because the amount of commerce being funnelled into your beaker machine is 50% higher before it hits any of the research buildings.

As far as I am aware, pretty much all bonuses are additive, rather than multiplicative.

Sorry, yes it is commerce. So that makes sense.

But I'm pretty sure I read on a thread earlier today that some of the bonuses are cumulative - for example the + 100% great General inside your own borders and the + 100 % Great General for the imperialistic trait combine to be a four times and not a three times bonus.

And the wonder that gives you +25% defense bonus is cumulative with your building defence bonuses, according to the old Primus Civ 4 guide I have (unless that has been changed since Civ 1.01 lol)
