Which books would you ban or censor?

Bible would be a good start.

I wouldn't ban Mein kampf for example, since I don't think it can contribute to anything. It was first and foremost Hitler himself who inspired all this final solution and the rest. I would rather go for books which has actually inspired many wacky things. Like the Bible, Koran and the Communist Manifesto.

All of them. I would replace the filthiest passages in every book with filthy passages from the next-least-filthiest book, until the filthiest book in existence is wiped out, and the least filthy has double circulation. In that way I will have saved the children.

You are saying that Mein Kampf has not inspired many wacky things?

None to be banned outright. I have no problem with restrictions for school libraries, though. I mean, high school or not, a school library doesn't need a porno book.

Why do we have two topics on the same subject? Am I missing something here?

In this one, I'd like to know exactly which books the proponents of book banning would like to ban. I asked the same question in my other thread, somewhere in the middle of the thread, and none of the proponents of book banning answered. :(

whats the book that inspired that guy to bomb the federal building in Oklahoma?

Either Unintended Consequences or The Turner Diaries. I believe The Turner Diaries's author was interviewed by Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes.

If you actually want those books banned, then you must want to ban The Bible and The Koran too, and probably a host of other books.

The Turner Diaries.

I wouldn't ban any books. I don't think a book really makes anybody do anything outright. It still took a crazy man to blow up the building in OKC. I honestly don't think that book told him to do it, or if it did, it did in the same way some people say God tells them to do terrible things, or the dog told the Son of Sam to kill people in New York. I mean, just look at Mark David Chapman, he read A Catcher In the Rye and thought it told him to kill John Lennon. I've read that book (it's a great book btw), and I felt no pangs to kill anybody.

There are of course, books that have no place in public libraries and schools and such.

Yes, no pornographic literature in the kids corner of libraries.
And I too wouldn't ban any books either, just because it's the readers who give the ideas mentioned in a book some power, not the book itself. A book isn't dangerous by itself, it's a madman with an idea, no matter where he got hooked up to it actually.

Yeah, I tried the same thing earlier with almost the same amount of success.

Interesting that you would say that about books but not about the Nazi symbols from earlier. (Not trying to be mean or picky just saying)

It's an issue about the presentation. (I'm actually glad that you led myself to a seemingly contradiction so I have a chance of explaining it.)
Let me explain: Mein Kampf teaches that Jews are the pest of the planet. You open the book and make up your own mind about it. If you before already had the idea or even the suspicion that Jews are the pest of the planet, then this book will support and encourage your beliefs. Sooner or later you would have adopted the ideas of that anyway, the reading just accelerated that process. OTOH, if you don't believe in Hitler, then this book would not change you at all and after finishing it you would put it back in the book shelf and would life on normally.
Waving a Swastika flag is a sign that you already made up your mind, that you actually do believe that the Holocaust and the mass slaughtering sparked by Hitler was a noble thing to do and it is worth of admiring it. You would display a sign that would make a clear for everybody seeing it that you openly endorse the principles of racism, ethnical cleaning and hatred against some of your fellowmen. Therefore the sight of clear racist signs and symbols should be forbidden because it just sparks animosity and anger among the members of your community.
I'm the king of long posts! Why am I still working in a prison, I should be a teacher!:p

I would censor no books. I would restrict access to some, pornography for example.

I would ban Beloved by Toni Morrison. That book is just aweful and the author certainly doesn't deserve a nobel prize for it.

thanks Foot i couldn't find it anywhere

i dont care about the 1st amendment when comes to the turner diaries they should all be burnt

I agree about how bad the book is, but I don't agree that it should be banned.
