If the games were updated with multiplayer, good AI and new graphics, which game would you most like to play:

gee looking at that poll, I might have to go out and find "Master of magic" I have never heard of it.

as for my answer, CIV III, because it is better than CIV I and II, although i loved them both, and well the other three i just didn't like at all, kind of weird since CTP is so much like CIV, but i just didn't get into it, and SMAC I didn't like the future concept, i am a person that likes to know about what i am doing, it didn't feel real with all those weird advances etc.

I agree with you, cutiestar, on SMAC. I couldn't get into techs that had no relation to anything historical. Similarly, I found things like "Laser Artillery" really hard to swallow. How the hell would one use lasers as artillery? Lasers are practically the definition of straight lines and the value of artillery is that it is not "line-of-sight".

I think I should warn you cutiestar that you're going to need a pretty high end system. ;)

Like you, I'd never heard of it, so I just popped across to Games Domain to check out the review. I couldn't spot a release date, but it listed a requirement of 2.7 megs RAM and recommended a whopping 4 megs RAM! :D

So I guess it's a tad less recent than Civ 3. Probably takes less time between turns though...

ok that will be gamesdomain.com ???? i am a game player, not overly knowledgable about the internet.

If it is turn based i will like it maybe, but anything real time i just don't like.

Mom was my favorite of all, as it was/is for many - it has been a long time coming for a sequal. I think it came out in 1994 or something :) Civ 1 quality graphics. Awful AI.

But.... 2 worlds linked by portals. about 12 races, each with unique units and abilities. The first sort of strategic resources (mana nodes) which allowed you to research like 300 different spells (really different, too, not just improvements in a line or same spells, different names) in 5 different groups. Total customization of your starting "civ", with 13 picks specializing at the various spell groups and about 30 different powers. Spells that were for combat only, spells that were for overland. Global spells that affected everything continuously. Summoned creatures. You could make your own magic items for heroes that would come to lead your armies. Probably 200 different units.

Combat was done on a second screen, with about a 12x12 grid for maneuver (enough to make a difference, but not enough that it took a long time, like Age of Wonders did Probably 30 - 90 seconds for a battle with up to 9 units per side) . You could actually attack a city solely as a raid to destroy buildings with the right spells or units.

The combat resolution was the best, with each figure in a unit having x attacks, and y shields to resist attacks that hit. It never had really whacky combat results, because the number of rolls per combat gave a great deal of time to for luck to average out.

It was the absolute best for city management, because instead of sending workers to specific tiles, every tile around the city simply modified how much each worker did. So having a bunch of hills around might increase your worker output by 5% each and rivers increased food production 5% each, so a worker would normally produce 2 shields, but could do 2.5 each with a 25% bonus. All you had to do was manage how many farmers, how many workers, and how many specialists.

The map also started out with tons of unexplored neutral caves, towers, ruins, etc, which might have treasures or chained heros gaurded by a variety of enemies. Caves and such left alone might send out a party to raid your towns if left alone.

some of the concepts were used with Master of Orion.

I think that if they did nothing but update the graphics and AI, it would be the best selling civ type game of all time. Sadly, microprose had just started it when they were bought out and liquidated the team doing the redesign, and nothing has come of it since.

Yeah. Master of Magic was a wonderful game. I thought I heard somewhere that a sequal was forthcoming. Anybody hear this?

MoM must have been one of the greatest civ like game's I've played and among the best games too. I do hope that well someday see working sequal for it. It definately would deserve one.

It's interesting that someone did pick civ 1. I remember when civ 2 came out I kind of missed civ 1 - I felt the increased number of techs gave you a lot less time to enjoy the tech you did get. Ultimately I prefered civ 2, though.

LOL, how undemocratic of me. I should have a "none" button. On the other hand though, what civ-style game wasn't included? Or do you just dislike the genre?

MoM.I still have the game on floppies. When it first came out it was unplayable, buggy. Back then if you weren't on the net, they would send you the patch on a floppy (or several). They even sent me one patch with a virius on it. I keep watching the company, that has the rights to it now, hoping for the announcement saying it will be done again or a sequal. They are talking about doing it, but nothing concrete yet. This game probably, along with MoO, kept me at the monitor longer then any others. Geeze may have to load it up and look at it again :D
