    Rome = USA
    Greece = Europe (the old powers)
    Carthage = Russia (the rival)
    Persia = China (the old power that will become the new rival)

    Depending on who you talk to either the ideal of Rome died with the western roman empire or died when Constantinople was conquered by the Turks.

    Mehmed considered his state the continuation of the Roman empire when he destroyed the Byzantines, but culturally it wasn't similar. Then again comparing late byzantine culture to classical roman culture they were worlds apart.

    There is no definite answer to when the Roman empire was destroyed or who inheritited it because many people did and the culture of that empire changed over time.

    The Holy Roman Empire claimed to continue the legacy of Rome but the Byzantines never acknowledged there lineage. Its hard to say who continued it.

    It is certain though that the culture of the Romans evolved and changed to be drastically different even before the fall of the western roman empire.

    But all roads don't lead there, nor have they for well over a millennium.

    Seriously though, there weren't even 3 Romes, and barely 2.

    Many cities have risen to, and surpassed, the influence that Rome once had.

    A better discussion would be "How many individual cities have risen to and/or surpassed the influence Rome had at its height?"

    Well no, obviously Australian or American roads don't lead there, but you still can drive to Rome from anywhere in Eurasia or Africa!

    No to mention that sea-lanes have become arguably more important than roads over the last 2000 years ;)

    Well if anyone has claim to be Rome( the empire ) it would have to be Turkey for being the successor state of the Ottoman Empire who conquered the last remnants of Rome.

    It's incredibly tenuous but it is better than anything anyone has.

    This is simply a translation error. The words "this" and "that" are essentially interchangeable in Russian, the exact meaning coming from context and declination. He means "this thread," as in, a few posts above yours on the same page.

    Economically possibly, militarily no.

    Sometimes it's hard to know if Americans are joking or they really don't know much about the rest of the world! ;)

    I can see some similarities with the USA of course but I wonder what criteria you would look at for this.
