I agree. The Empty Man loses a bit of steam in the second act; the prologue however could have been a terrific film in itself.
Two other recent really good horror films, are Censor and Saint Maud from the UK. Two quite different experiences and time periods, but they are both centered around a female protagonist trapped in a sort of existential crisis. Loneliness, guilt, faith - all of the usual suspects of the genre.
