I know that soldiering is a somewhat irregular (and commonly chastised) profession, but I'm not so sure that performing intimate acts in front of a camera for money is the greatest and noblest sacrifice one could make.

We cannot systematically erase war and violence, so your remark is irrelevant and meaningless.

It is a fact of life we must accept that there are bad people out there and if we want to stay safe, or even better, take them down to protect others, then we will have to build a strong military.

EDIT: It is akin to saying that "frauds of accounting could not exist in the first place without accountants"

Whose lives? Apart from innocent deaths from "collateral damange", the people committing these injustice are likely to be rank-and-file soldiers (often conscripts) who had little to nil choice in the matter, and sometimes it's part of a justifiable response to an armed threat to the state (hence they are only "doing their duty").

There is a degree of culpability and a degree of not. Soldiers at high enough levels, or those soldiers ordered to do certain specific tasks have a moral duty to humanity to refuse and resist, even at the cost of their lives. Example: I can accept a WWII German soldier following orders to fight to defend Germany, but if such a soldier were asked to execute some Jewish children, then this soldier should prefer to put a bullet through his own head first, and committing the atrocity would be completely unacceptable.

However, certain soldiers are indeed, not at fault, but will still die due to the arrangement of war and conflict. That is the tragedy of life. And the point of Remembrance Day.

A commander-in-chief is then tasked with making a difficult moral decision. Do we invade and kill thousands of innocent conscripts and perhaps even more thousands through collateral damage? Or do we sit by while possibly even more thousands are brutally murdered and executed and the rest hundred of thousands are oppressed?

Would it be immoral to airdrop in free pornography as a distraction?

Considering I voted the porn star to be the more immoral profession, I am forced to conclude yes.

Not necessarily. That could cost valuable supplies needed for the war effort. Rape effectively detains them where they are, while placing the burden of a pregnant woman and the newborn children.

Shouldn't we be building asylums instead of military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan? If the indigenous peoples need protection from themselves, shouldn't they be placed in straight jackets and padded rooms?

Well that puts soldiers into an even more compromising position. Because now every soldier needs to be judged not by the intent, but of the outcome of his actions. This of course, like all consequence based judgement is absolutely silly because you're judging against counter-factuals, but even if you run with it, it loads up to a horrific number of actual murderers.
For example if we were to condemn drone operators post-hoc for the effects of their attacks, you'd be looking at a third to 98% of them being murders, based on how they interpreted blurry aerial photos.

This. Modern soldier's are protecting us from many dangers. I for one feel much safer knowing that we have people out on the battlefront protecting us from terrorists. Porn stars? Please.

So you'd suggest this soldier should kill an innocent person (himself) and condemn several others (his family, maybe friends) to a life of misery, possibly poverty, perhaps retribution, and also do nothing to save the Jewish children since they'd likely be killed by another soldier anyway.

So how come so many ex-military become bums? Shouldn't the discipline help their maintain their lives?

Of course. Every regime wants you to think you're a hero & your gun is "protecting freedom" while the other guy is a demon & a murderer. It's kind of like religion that way (our cause is right, everyone else is wrong).

It's not really something you can objectively measure though it's safe to say the Taliban wouldn't even be a major force if we hadn't armed them, helped build them up really.

Again, you can't really say that. If that were the case why were they fighting so hard to maintain their "brutal oppression"?

I think I'll play it safe & not kill anyone, just in case my predictions about killing to save are wrong, you know.

How is this even tough comparison? There is nothing objectively immoral about the job of a porn star, all they do is simulate procration for the enjoyment of others.

It is possible to be a soldier and never do anything immoral (especially if you never actually see combat), however many things that soldiers have done or are ordered to do can certainly be immoral.

EDIT: Despite the milenia of propaganda and brain washing, theere is also nothing inherently noble about being a soldier either, although they can do noble acts such as protecting their people and lands from an invading force.

The two are not even similar and thus we should not be comparing them to each other.

the righteousness of risking your neck to save others trumps the righteousness of providing the people saved by the people risking their necks with sexually oriented entertainment... :thanx: for risking your necks...

My cousin is in the army, and this year went to Brisbane to help out with flood evacuation, recovery and reconstruction. It's quite misrepresentative to say that soldiers are all about killing (and narrowing the focus is a bit redundant, because you're essentially saying 'immoral soldiers are immoral. Duh). It is entirely possible that soldiers can do immoral things, but that's independent of the nature of the profession itself. A lot of the work soldiers engage in is not just neutral, but is good. However much you do not want soldiers to be used in particular situations, I don't think it's fair to be saying that the profession is not moral, as it does not intrinsically involve killing. Of course, a lot of the people who say that it's a more moral profession than being a porn star would do so because they think that being a porn star is intrinsically immoral, but you don't have to think that to come to the same conclusion, as it's a comparative measure we're talking about. I don't particularly see a reason to think being a porn star is immoral, but then neither is being a soldier in itself. On the other hand, the work of a soldier can be quite moral, but I don't really think you can apply that to the work of actors providing a consumer entertainment product.

The same could be said that being a porn star isn't all about having sex on camera. All jobs involve things outside of the most basic job description. But killing is the essential character of a soldier. If your cousin helped out with flood evacuation, recovery and reconstruction, but was not expected to kill, he would be any number of other things.

It's possible to be a soldier who never kills though. It's not possible to be a porn star who never has sex on camera. I'm not sure how I'd vote if that weren't the case.

I disagree that killing is that intrinsic or central to the job. I mean, how many soldiers actually kill people (and of that, though you get into dangerously subjective territory, how much is entirely immoral? Aren't we equally, or at least partially, guilty of it when they're doing it at our behest?)? To take a random army, there are apparently 6600 Estonian soldiers. I'm not aware of Estonia being involved in any conflicts, so I'd probably guess that either zero or close to zero of those soldiers have killed anyone. The basic job description of a soldier is not, AFAIK, 'kill people'. If killing is as intrinsic to a soldier as having sex on camera is to a porn star, then I dare say a lot of people would be pretty disappointed.
