Which movies have you watched? IE': NO CAPES!

Wifey decided to watch Love Guaranteed last night: an unassuming but pleasant little Netflix rom-com, which does pretty much exactly what you'd expect of it.

"My Octopus Teacher" on Netflix. Its a documentary about a man's obsession with a particular octopus. Extraordinary! It is worth one's time.

I was considering putting it on my list, but had hesistated, because the ...er... "scope" of the movie seems rather limited.
Guess I'll give it a try.

Mine and my sister's families watched Mulan last weekend. It continues the tradition of Disney's live action remakes not living up to their animated predecessors. I won't address the troubling controversies surrounding the main actress and the movie's production here, even though those are important issues.

As far as the movie itself, first and foremost, the absence of the songs is really a loss. The songs are really what makes a Disney movie great, without them, the movie just becomes another bland story. I hated that Mushu was gone, replaced by a barely passable, random appearing CGI phoenix. I also didn't like the addition of Li Gong's evil witch character. It just added an unnecessarily convoluted element to the plot. The cinematography had some positive elements, but there were several scenes where the CGI was done rather poorly and it was difficult to ignore once seen.

All in all it was only an "okay" film. Was it worth the $29.99 price? Eh, if it had been in the theaters we would have probably seen it on our theater's $5 Tuesday night. There were 11 of us who watched it at home, that's less than $3 a person and we can watch it again if we want. I guess that's overall a positive. However, I read that it'll be available to all D+ subscribers in December, so if you're interested in seeing it I'd recommend waiting the 3 months rather than ponying up the $30 for it.

I've read the title a million times over and I have finally had to say this..... CAPES are cool ! Thank You ! :)

Re-watched Interstellar last night and it's a delight as always, a true masterpiece.

That movie also plays a bit role in my own origin story so I feel a special connection with it. Back when I was about to graduate from school, I had a job offer from a patent law firm. The job was extra cushy, the pay was good and it was a super easy, stress free job with high job security in a low cost of living area. I was very tempted to accept the offer, especially since I didn't have any other offers at the time. The drawback was that taking the job would have almost definitely ended my engineering career before it started - it would have been extremely difficult to pivot out of a career in patent law and back into engineering with only a couple of internships' worth of experience as an engineer. I went back and forth on it and was working up to tell my wife I was going to take the job and then we went to see Interstellar.

We were both really taken with the movie and drove back to the house in silence, just kind of taking it all in. At the last stoplight before we turned into our apartment complex, my wife turned to me and said that I needed to do awesome things in aerospace and not work in patent law, that I needed to go build the things they flew in the movie.

That was that and I turned the job down. Now when we watch Interstellar, whenever they show one of the spaceships firing attitude control thrusters (the little white puffs of gas that come out of the sides and corners of the spaceships), I remind the Mrs those are the kind of rocket engines I design for a living now, in no small part thanks to her push after watching the movie. :)

As already reported over in the TV thread, the most recent movie I watched was What Happened To Monday?, starring Noomi Rapace, Noomi Rapace, Noomi Rapace, Noomi Rapace, Noomi Rapace, Noomi Rapace, and Noomi Rapace — oh yeah, and also Glenn Close and Willem DeFoe. Yet another potentially interesting sci-fi premise wasted on an otherwise fairly cookie-cutter action-movie.

I think I've had that in my queue for like a year. I like the cast, but for some reason I've never pulled the trigger. Actually, I know why: 47 on Metacritic and 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. I don't consciously let professional reviews guide my viewing choices, but sometimes it's subconscious.

Yeah, it's not a bad movie, but not really a surprising/ interesting one either. If you've seen, let's say, off the top of my head, Logan's Run, The Matrix, and The Island, then you pretty much know exactly what to expect.

Yes, yes, and yes. Now that you mention it, though, the last time I saw Logan's Run it was on VHS. I wonder how it holds up. JustWatch says none of my streaming services has it for 'free', so I'm probably not going to run home to watch it. I'm curious, though.

I liked it a lot.

Well, I'm glad that my picky-pickiness is not contagious ;)

Was originally thinking of posting the following trailer in the Star Wars thread, but it might be more appropriate here, even though I haven't seen the movie (yet).

Quite possibly some/ most/ all of you have seen this already, but just in case you haven't...

I think my general state of mind about this one could be described as "Cautiously enthusiastic" (paging also @Valka D'Ur)

I'll watch it when it eventually comes to TV in however many years.

I tend to be far behind what the current trends are. The last time I was on track with everyone else was in the '70s - '90s when the first three Star Wars movies were released, the Dune movie was released, and I saw Henry V, The Handmaid's Tale, Contact, and Toy Story 2 in the theatres. I have not set foot in a theatre since last century (seriously). There were other movies I saw in the theatres during those years, of course, but it was never something I did regularly, like once a week or once a month.

I just hope that neither Kevin J. Anderson nor Brian Herbert will have any input into this movie. If they do, it will be a disaster.

We watched an early screening of Greenland tonight. There was a lot of the usual suspense movie plot cliches particularly in the first half of the movie, but we generally overlooked them, as the latter half really delivered with an emotional ending. While not as effects heavy as say 2012, what special effects there were, were well done and believable. (There were some absolutely gorgeous/terrifying shots of the comet.) Butler, Baccarin, & Floyd did an excellent job as a family struggling to remain together and survive, however some of the character plot points/decisions did have us rolling our eyes with their inanity. Overall, it was worth watching - gave it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. I think STX has finally set a release date for the 25th of this month.

The US release date has been delayed indefinitely. They're saying now "late 2020", but I think even that might be optimistic. Definitely something for my Netflix queue, though.

Wow, yeah I see that now - 4th quarter TBD. Odd they would have still been promoting the 25th last night though.

Nihongo trailer. Maybe a couple of little bits I haven't seen before. Christmas release date is, I presume, for Japan.

Watched Back to the Future II for the first time yesterday. Not a bad movie, but not as good as the first.

I thought Come to Daddy would be a dark comedy about a man reuniting with his father but instead it was this really dark drama with murder and mayhem. I didn't really care for it and not only because it wasn't what I expected; I found it boring.

Next up: Mortal Engines
