BTW in a somewhat related note, some days ago i saw "El Día de la Bestia" (The Day of the Beast). A spanish movie. Funny as hell, but cant make sense of the end, even if a try.

I am starting to wonder weather I'd like Fury Road or not. I saw one trailer and it gave me a really bad feeling. Like I'd find the movie, even if it did some things very well with regards to the action and visuals, very tedious. On the other hand - I can be won over by style. 300 proved so splendidly. But with its Classic fascist-like heroism, racism and fantasy-elements it also had a very good setting in which its style could flourish relatively easily. I don't see Mad Max having that advantage. It doesn't have any great concepts like that, I imagine, but just a bunch of dudes, due to its chaotic world. Sin City, another movie I enjoyed very much primarily for its style, also was focused on independent individuals, but it pulled it together with a certain elegance which surrounded its characters. The story arcs weren't deep, but well composed. Sin City 2 showed what happens when this fails - an in the end tedious movie. From what I hear, Fury Road got very little to tell about the characters to begin with.

So I think I'll find it tedious.
But just having thought about it so ridiculously much, I'll properly find out.

A bit generous IMO. The movie was a decent watch, but it struggled to do anything special, IMO. It felt really predictable and standard-like executed.

The Terminator (1984) - 8/10

It holds up well, if you haven't seen it in a while. Rewatching the original certainly reminds one why people keep trying to revive this franchise. After all, its a 100-minute chase, shot for short money ($6.4 million, the equivalent of ~$15m today), and starring a couple of no-names from television. Should be an easy recipe to follow. And if anyone decides to make a soundtrack for existential nihilism, I'd nominate Brad Feidel's theme to be on it.

Once Upon A Time In America (1984), final film by Sergio Leone. Director's cut: about 4 hours long.

It was long, but it was worth it. There's a scene which instantly reminded me of A Clockwork Orange, with the gang waltzing around a maternity ward and classical music on the background. Golden. The tone and theme of the movie reminded me of Alain Resnais movies, especially Stavinsky. They sure are miles apart, but there's something there. It's definitely a masterpiece on a whole other level than, say, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, which is my second favourite Western after Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch. Perhaps I have a bit of a bias towards the gravely dramatic and the dramatically grave, but it certainly is among the best I've seen.

I also saw this movie for the first time recently. Immediately became one of my favourites. I especially love the music. For anyone who hasn't seen the director's cut, the original release from the 80's was basically ruined by excessive editing. You MUST see the extended version to have any appreciation for this film.

Maybe 9/10 if you will, but we've been overloaded with scores of other mafia films which follow in Scorsese's style. It's not that predictable unless you know the characters' stories.

In my view it could have been hugely better. Scorcese is not good with non-linear (mental issues) topics, and it shows here, despite some very good actor choices.

The story seems bloated. 7/10 i suppose, due to production standard and actors.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 8/10

I saw it along time ago and remembered it as just another generic slasher. To my surprise, it managed to exceed all expectations and turned out to be an entertaining and well done thriller with a cool concept and cool villain. I think it's been marred with so many sequels, remakes, and sequels of remakes that everyone forgot that it was actually a good movie.

The main problem with it was that a lot of character traits and plot elements were clumsily revealed through dialogue.

Charlie Chaplin:
Tilly's Punctured Romance
City Lights

Tilly's Punctured Romance was the first feature-length comedy...ever! It's almost not worth watching. As in the very early Jackie Chan movies, Chaplin plays an unprincipled, self-centered bully. He talks a battleship-sized Tilly into stealing her rich uncle's money and eloping with him to the city. Tilly, played by Marie Dressler, IMHO, steals the show. She is so big, so homely and yet so good natured. When she gets drunk and then begins flirting with all the Keystone Cops who come to arrest her for public drunkenness, she is marvelous!

City Lights has the Charlie Chaplin we know and love. His "Little Tramp" character falls for a pretty blind girl who sells flowers on the street. Due to a series of of mishaps, she mistakenly believes he is a millionaire. When she gets an eviction notice, Charlie promises to take care of it for her. Now, all he needs is some money. Hilarity follows.

I'd pass. I was pretty hyped up for this one as I liked the original trilogy. All the fan boys said it was the best movie ever (at least the writers on Cracked said this). Last time I get movie recommendations from Cracked. . Actually was going to watch it regardless.

And like you, I enjoyed 300 and Sin City. But I just didn't find Mad Max: Fury Road all that. See my comments on page 3 of this thread. I have a very difficult time following the action (not the case with 300 and Sin City).
