The Philadelphia Story (1940 100% rotten tomatoes)

Can you believe that? 100%?

It's the eve of socialite Katherine Hepburn's marriage to her second husband (a noveau riche man of the people), when her first husband, Gary Grant (extremely well-to-do yacht designer), reappears to put a spanner in the works by gaining an entrance for reporter, and aspiring author, James Stewart to cover the wedding for a gossip magazine.

So far, so complicated, and it gets more complicated.

This, I found, was an extremely cerebral movie.

Well written, well acted, and interesting to watch.

It could have done with more blood-spattered machete-wielding maniacs, though. As there weren't any at all.

I saw both Kingsman (2015) and Zathura (2005; the spiritual successor to Jumanji) over the weekend. If you can get past the obnoxious sibling rivalry scenes in Zathura, the film isn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be and it also gets point for correctly using cryonic over cryogenic. Kingsman is very sweary and extremely violent, though mostly bloodless (in keeping with its 15 rating), and the scenes with the bad guys' heads exploding has to be seen to be believed (which is not a compliment). I did quite like the film though (other than the aforementioned and the church sequence).

I watched Fifth Element last night. It's still a hoot.

Has anyone seen Luc Besson's latest film Valerian and the City of 1,000 Planets? It allegedly was released here last month, but it didn't make into any of my theaters. It scored 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Always like fighting movies so I gave Street a go.

Awfully boring. Made it halfway through before giving up.

Jason Bourne. Lots of action. No comprehensible plot.
Totally agree. Just watched it and it was a string of car chases separated by fistfights, bad people and shootouts.

I'd give it 4.5/10

Yes. If you liked The Fifth Element (and I did), this is basically more of the same, but turned up to 11. Looks gorgeous, has a just-about-coherent storyline (so long as you don't demand physical plausibility ;) ), Cara Delavigne turns in a much better performance than you might have expected from yet another model-turned-actress (certainly she beats the pants off Milla Jovovovovich in TFE), and -- most importantly! -- the newer movie does not include Ruby Rhod, who ranks right up (down?) there with Jar-Jar on my list of 'Most. Annoying. Movie characters. Ever!'.

On the downside, the lead actor could certainly have been better chosen: I couldn't take the character seriously at all, because Dane DeHaan comes across more like someone's annoying kid brother with a porn-addiction, than a hardened veteran soldier-detective who's actually irresistible to real women. Hell, he was better in TASM2 -- which I only saw recently, on TV -- than he was in this. (I read a movie-review BTL comment that described DD as Leonardo DiCaprio's H-addicted understudy, and I can see why...).

Cara Deviligne has a very interesting face :)

Yeah, she's almost got a Brooke Shields-type thing going there :old: But I wasn't just looking at her face ;)

Wikipedia tells me that I mis-spelled her name: it's actually "Delevingne". I assume that your mis-spelling was deliberate, and like it better.

Yes, but, you see, I don't think The Fifth Element would have worked as well as it did without the incredibly annoying Ruby Rhod, while The Phantom Menace would have worked better without Jar Jar Binks. I'll admit that RR gets under my skin so maybe he could have been less annoying, but Jar Jar ended up being unacceptable.

Ruby Rhod… expanded on the ridiculousness of that future world. Jar Jar didn't.
:cringe:
