No, Canada will suck forever at football.
Maybe they will do better with soccer, the lesbian variant of football. It appears to be popular in the USA.

Soccer = football ?

No, absolutely not!

Football, is the ONLY proper English (and French for that matter) word for Voetbal/Fussball/Futbol/Futebol/Calcio.

Soccer is actually nothing.
However, a bunch of Lesbians in the USA (and possibly Norway) decided to abuse the mother of all sports and name is soccer.

Whatever American lesbians do, is their business, but it would be noble of you to stop using this blasphamous word, when refering to football.

Italy's a top team? we haven't won the WC since Spain '82!!!
The poll is about teams joining the club of WC winners. Italy, England, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay or France have already won it.

If I've excluded those teams, it was to be able to put more other teams in the poll. Of course, we can doubt teams which have already won it will do it again untill 2050, especially when it comes about Uruguay or even France, but well, it's the only way I've found to make appear all the teams I wanted in the poll. And actually, even in such a case, I had to remove teams I wanted to add such as Poland, Portugal, Denmark or even Russia.

Anyway, I still believe that 4 teams are really above the others when it goes about World Cup : Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Italy.

Who cares ? the language is called English, not American, Australian or Irish. As such, the English name should be the only official English name. :p

Actually, French canadians call football "soccer" too. For the matter, the problem in French is exactly the same as the problem in English... however, most French speakers are European or African, which isn't the case about English, so there's not such a debate in France.

well... soccer did come from England too I think. Somewhere in the 19th century, when the difference between football and rugby wasn't that clear yet (go figure that out ;)) and there were no universal rules yet..

I'm affraid you have to show more respect for the deviated linguistics of a country other than the country where the language originated from.
You could also say that any Flemish word never is proper Dutch word ... despite that 25 % of all Dutch speaker use words like "gans" (heel, very ex. gans schoon, gans lief), plezant (fijn, pleasant, fun), etc ...
However, a Taalunie studie concludes that Dutch speaker prefer Flemish Dutch over "Dutch Dutch" :p

I know that a lot of foreigners prefere Flemish... for language like French and Portuguese it is much closer to their normal pronounciation, which makes it easier. Other than that I assume that all 10 million Belgians in Belgium prefere Flemish... and I assume that the rest must come from the provinces in the south of Holland... but I can't imagine they think they speak Flemish. I'd like to see that study (link?).

I never use 'gans' or 'plezant' unless I want to make fun of Belgium. :D Nonetheless I do know what it means. Flemish is just a bit like ancient Dutch to me. You guys just use a few different words. The most funny thing is when I watch Baantjer on Flemish tv.. with subtitles!

Well, the thing is that this debate has already been done several times over here SonicX. The official rule on which everyone agreed, especially the British, was that Football would be call football and not soccer on CFC. Since most people talking about the sport in here are European anyway, it's rather natural to call it how Europeans are calling it.

@ Willem : http://www.vrtnieuws.net/nieuwsnet_master/default/magazine/overzicht/050908Taalunie/index.html is a link to the VRT news site

@ Marla : I don't care who says what to which word, I just find that "we are right, you are wrong" attitude a little disturbing :)

Better than sports those pot-smoking EuroFags like, such as cricket, which is like baseball, but only without the excitement.

But there's hope for you yet. NFL Europe seems to be exploding in popularity. Go to one of their games and you'll see a real sport.

Then again Stapel wasn't exactly polite...

@Pasi - Its easy for a minority sport to grow rapidly but its unlikely to ever get close to the popularity of football in Europe.

And that fact probably makes football fans quite arrogant, which is possibly why we get the occasional abusive post.

oh excuse me, how is ice hockey doing?

Have you ever seen cricket? Not the test matches, they're boring but one day matches. Stop taking your anger out on everyone else simply because no one in North America wants to watch ice hockey.
