Where no man has gone before except me!
Now you will probaly say Warrior right? Wrong.

IMHO The most unless character are chariots. A long time ago (Civ1  ) this unit was feared in the early stages the game, but now it is almost a joke. With the addition of Elephants in Civ2 I never use these anymore. Why? because in my games I go for the "happy" techs first (BTW I play on Deity).

Now I know many people will have different opinions than mine and I want to here them!

 Now who do you think is the most usless unit in the game.

warriors and chariots are both bad, i never use any of them if i have to. (1,1,1) what can that do???

The most useless units to me are:

-Warriors. I forgo building these, even if they are the only fighting units I can build at the start, and go right to Settlers.

-Chariot. As mentioned on this thread, they are pretty much useless in CivII. I only have them if I get them for free in goodie huts. I feared them in CivI, and one even destroyed a Battleship in one of my cities!

-Submarine. I rarely build these because they are so pitiful on defense. The only thing I find good about them is that they can at times destroy Battleships.

-Destroyer. These are lunchmeat for every other modern ship you can build. I find these useful only for scouting and if my enemies are still defending their cities with Phalanx and Pikemen (even then I lose a Destroyer or two).

-Partisans. I see these as Explorers with firearms.

-Cruise Missiles. I use these only to soften enemy defenses in cities (provided they don't have a SAM site or SDI). I might use these more if they were cheaper to build. I hate them when the AI uses it because the AI uses them only against my Battleships. ARGH!

-Helicopter. They attack only once per turn, and ANY unit can attack it, be they ground, air, or naval units!

most useless for me
aircraft carrier
nukes
marines
frigate

explorers - cuz they siphon off a shield and can't attack for crap!

I love partisans, because I never build them (always NON)

Nukes- Never use 'em.
Marines- I like the amphibious ability, but they're bloody weak attackers.
Riflemen- You seriously expect me to defend with these guys in the modern age?
Galleons- A frigate can transport AND kick @$$ when necessary.

Oh, and Howitzers :D What a piece of crap. What was Sid smokin' when he threw that one in there

no way man! Once you have an arsenal of howeritzs on enemy rail lines its boom one hit (disregard city walls) then move safetly back to a fortification. All i ever need is ten howeritzes and two mech infantry and the game will be mine:soldier:

Whoooooosh...... the sarcasm flies overhead

I am really annoyed when Leo's upgrades my caravels to useless galleons automatically. I want a choice between galleon and frigate - there are situations when both would be useful. Other than that, I must concur with what other people have said - submarines are useless, cruise missiles are fun when you can defeat a whole stack of barbs but are otherwise useless, nukes are fundamentally evil and destroyers are far too weak. I'm not too fond of pikemen, but this is an irrational thing and there would be no good reason for phalanxes to be upgraded to legion then musketeers. I never build artillery either, but that's because there is not that large a gap between cannons and tanks. I love tanks, have I ever mentioned how much I like tanks? Thanks.
:tank:

There are many units that I use infrequently, mainly because of the poor defensive capabilities, such as catapalts, cannon, artillary, subs etc. I know they are all good attacking units, but every time i send one out it gets killed before it can attack.

There is one unit I have never built, the explorer, what a waste of time that is. As for those Howie's:rolleyes:

Ferenginar

howitzers are very useful, tanks aren't strong enough to plow through one mech infantry (vet). It takes about three tanks to kill one. Howitzers, its just like blasting through! :hammer:

If you get a chariot from a hut it can be useful though because early on its one of the few units that can move two squares every turn so it is at least useful for scouting.

u have a bigger chance of winning with a settler than u do with a warrior, now thats really pathetic (allthough i always build a warrior or two for exploring in the beginning)

Let's see... Every unit has a use in the game, but some playing styles make them more or less effective.

warriors are lame, but still good for martial law.
chariots are expensive horsemen
triremes suck, but there is no alternative for many turns
cruise missiles are a waste of shields
subs are only good when used to defend a city
helicopters are powerful when used in groups, but weak alone
artillery are stronger than armor, but need an escort

My vote goes to the CRUISE MISSILE. What a waste of production! The same can be accomplished with other, re-usable units.

BTW, Judge_Spear, did you know that partisans have a base attack strength of 32  (that's 48 for veterans!) against any unit with an attack strength of 0? Hardly just an explorer with a gun!

i'm never building (with VERY rare exceptions, 'fcourse):
warriors, cannons, frigates, artillery, helicopters, pikemen, all kinds of modern ships except ironclad (as first pretty powerful naval unit), battleship (for attacking cities on coasts and protecting transports and carriers), transports and carriers (for my supporting air units)
i do not use cruise missiles, partisans, fanatics, explorers

my strategy is simple - i'm very peaceful almost all the game (not counting destroying of some very annoying and aggressive civs time to time, usually sending some armies of Crusaders and Musketeers ;) ) until i research Automobile/Advanced Flight and Combined Arms; i load up few carriers full of bombers, some transports full of AlpineTroops, Marines, Paratroopers or Riflemen, some battleships for protecting carriers and transports and first attacks on chosen cities... and.. in few turns, there is only one enemy city left until 2019 :)

BTW, Judge_Spear, did you know that partisans have a base attack strength of 32  (that's 48 for veterans!) against any unit with an attack strength of 0? Hardly just an explorer with a gun! [/B]

Whoa.... now that I didn't know! I think I may have found a good use for Partisans. Since they ignore zones of control and they treat all terrain as roads, I can use them to get my forces deep into enemy territory. I could switch back and forth between a Partisan unit and, say, a Howitzer, and get them both deep into enemy territory, ignoring zones of control. Repeat as necessary. Especially useful if your enemy has railroaded every tile in their territory. :D

Believe it or not, I would rather use Galleons than Frigates. One reason is that Galleons can carry four units compared to two by Frigates. Another reason is that Galleons do not cause unhappiness when they are out of a city under Republic/Democracy. Additionally, Frigates do not get upgraded by Leo's, while Galleons do (to Transport when you discover Industrialization).

Another quite useless unit in CivII that I feared in CivI: the Riflemen. In CivII, Riflemen are pretty much obsolete once you can build Alpine Troops and Mech Infantry. In CivI, Riflemen fortified in cities were a big hurdle. They can fend off Armors and Battleships easily!

allthough the alpine troops stats are pretty good, i never build them cuz i always have alotta riflemen in my cities, and its not very long until i start buying mech infantry

I have never built the "archer"... I think its quite useless compared to spearmen and legions.

Other useless units:
- Marines (weak, weak, weak)
- Destroyers (crap, I love crushing the ai destroyers with my battleship)
- Nukes (never use them, but build them to make my opponents fear me)
- Subs
- Cruises..

The units i use most:
- Mech inf
- Howies
- Transports
- Carriers
- Bombers
- AEGIS Cruisers

Explorers are by far the worst unit in the game. I don't even think i've ever in my history of playing civ 2 wasted shields on one. Best all around unit: Armor!
