Who do you like the best?

I see the French and English as a pirate pick, while the Dutch are a merchant pick and Spain is a boring pick.

I am usually England. :)

I've always wondered the difference. I quite enjoy going the dutch cause IIRC you start pretty much on the Spanish main so get to plunder merchies quickly. Failing that I tend to go the British cause.... well I'm Scottish.

I actually start off as Spanish quite often. Since they are at war with the other three countries so much it's easy to gain rank quickly without making any one country too upset with me.

Then, after I become a Spanish Duke, I switch sides to increase my rank with the other nations at expense to Spanish shipping.

Spain, by all means.
Get that Spanish Dukedom then maul the Treasure Fleet.
Join the English and French to hammer on Spain.

Fast and profitable.

I catch quite a few treasure ships near Venezuala, on the Spainish main, but I am not sure whether that's my game or every game... :)

The Treasure Fleet is a special group of 3-4 spanish ships that sails around the Spanish Main, up towards Florida, and then off the map towards Spain itself. They don't have the title Treasure Ship, they just show the type of ship (treasure galleon) and it's name. You'll know if you see them at port because their ships remain visible outside the city just like the villains' ships.

If you are playing the un-patched game then you will probably never see them. Because of a bug which makes them never reappear one they've been destroyed by the AI pirates or completed their first trip. And the barmaid will just tell you were the ships were headed when they disappeared.

That bug has been fixed in the patch though, so now they respawn every year.

ehh, they don't carry all that much gold. I only got a couple thousand from each ship. Which is kind of a let down after how much it gave in the origional game (50,000 or so). But they do carry a ton of luxuries that you can trade for gold.

It's probably not worth sailing across the map to take them out, but it's a fun diversion if you are near by where the barmaid says they are headed. Or if you just stumble accross them. And it's fun just capturing the whole group of ships in quick succession. :D

The Treasure Fleet starts at Trinidad in January of even years (ie: 1640, 1642, 1644, etc.)

It then makes one huge round along the Spanish Main and by October-ish next yr (1641, 1643...) it leaves Florida Keys to the east and out of the map.

If you capture the ships in the beginning of the year, they're full of spices and luxuries, if you capture them at Florida Keys at the end of the next, they'll be loaded with gold.

In the unpatched version, they will come around (or get sunk by pirates) every two years, but the bug was that the barmaid keeps on telling you they're at Cartagena..

Unpatched some time ago, sat waiting for them for 3 years. No show. Had already sunk all of them on a previous year.

And that full of gold bit is pretty small. Never got a regular Treasure ship without at least 1000 more than these guys carry (when they are NE of Havana).

Ah.
That's interesting. I usually grabbed them when they were around the Spanish Main, since they would have a decent amount of cash. About 5k but tons of spices and such.

I never managed to screw the whole fleet though.

I'm always the Dutch, and I always try to stay on the Dutch side throughout the game.

Mainly 'cos their captain looks coolest when you're choosing factions. :p

 I seriously laughed when I saw the frenchie "Thats fresh out of a joke!"

;)

I like to play the Dutch and more or less freelance. I kill as many fellow pirates as I can which gets me rank with just about everyone. If im strapped for cash or food ill sack a grain or treasure ship that is french/british/spanish. I try to rotate the nations that I piss off. So far i think im up to 3rd or 4th rank with everyone at least. Maxed out on france and dutch. England and Spain should be easy to play off one another.
