Salt Peter! Coal! Iron!

I am just kidding. Actually, in my many games of Civ III this is only the second time that I can recall that I am able to build the Iron Works.

Resources have been scarce while playing Conquests...so this little mountain town is great.

Right now in this game I have 1 iron, 2 salt peter and 2 coal.

I just discontinued playing a game on a large map where I was on a rather large continent with no horses and only one iron. I ran up against a similar thing in my last game where all the rubber was on the other side of the planet - all on a single continent. ....very frustrating :crazyeye: - however I did have 4 whales off the coast in 1 city! How about a "Sea World' wonder ;)

My first game was a huge map large land with 7 players including me and I got no salpeter, no coal, no rubber, no oil, no aluminium and no uranium, with a grandtotal of 2 luxuries. Now I'm on a huge map large land with 10 players including me, and I've got every strategic up to oil (with 2 coals, 2 rubbers, 2 oils), not yet discovered alu and uranium. and 5 luxuries ! Oh boy.
But... I never had the Iron Work :(

Man the iron works!!! I am so jealous. I would be happy to have an occasional iron or maybe a saltpeter...Fortunately the temple of zeus, knights templar, and longbowmen allow you to wage war for resources if you have none, but it sure makes it tough...

Well, that city can only ever reach size 6 so the Iron Works is somewhat wasted. If the city was one tile NE though...

I was going to suggest it but from the borders it seems that it is a well developed city. :hmm:

I was playing an experimantal game as england on a large contitnents, monarch. I didnt get any salt peter. You need that for the UU. I wanted to build UUs and dominate the seas and enslave all ships. Argh. The hittitites had some and they were isolated on an island. I was a republic so I sent over a small force (20 units) to conquer the island and take the salt peter. No dice. I got swamped with those 3 man chariots. My force was defeated. Meanwhile english technology marched forward and I got nationalism. Now I dont need any stinking salt peter for my riflemen, but my GA timing is all screwed up. I am ready to hit industrialization and all I have is a bunch of pikemen. Not exactly the knid of game I envisioned.

Good call, did not notice.

Still, an interesting question. Is the culture more important than those extra shields one could garnder with a larger city?

EDIT: What is that little sword icon near the city?

Actually, I do have rubber. I did not see it at first because I had a unit on the tile...and now I have Oil also (in a different area).

The city can grow to 7.

Yes, this city has almost everything built in it now. I didn't want to raze it...it is my only souce of Iron and I need it to fight Sumeria.

I have Iron Works, Factory, and I have just built the Hoover Dam (in another city). This city can produce! I just wish I could use it to build ships...

There's a problem with that screenshot, why isn't the coal-hills railroaded???

it is now...that's what those workers were doing. I just moved them out of the way for the screenshot. everything is railroaded.

and I now have 2 sources of Aluminum and 1 source of uranium.

this is by far the best Conquest game I have had yet.

and the poor Ottomans.....they don't have rubber or Aluminum..and I was trying to plant a spy....and now they just declared war on me....so now I will destroy them!! muhahahahah!!!

Size 7?

Ahhh - agricultural! :D

What a coincidence... In my current C3C game, the best I've had since a long time, the Ottomans, well, HAD rubber and coal... Muahahahahahaha !

All of this reminds me of a saying we used to have in college:

I sees what I likes and I wants it. I takes what I wants and I makes it mine.

I don't think that the resources are "scarce", just more distributed. I've been playing several different Epic games lately (checking out the new civ traits, wonders, UU's, etc) and have yet to have any lux close to my start position. There usually on the same continent, but I haven't seen nearly as many occurances of 4 or more of hte same lux within one city's radius.

Been playing Civ3 since it came out, yet to be able to build Iron Works in an Epic game (have on scenarios and mods). So go knock some Ottoman heads

In my current C3C epic game, I have an Iron Works in the first ring of my FP and there is at least one other spot in my lands that could build one. I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

Holly cow!
What a screenie. A shame there is no future tech to level down hill to grassland. :D
