I believe as a final discussion for DG4 Game Options we should go through the motions and make official our choice of opponents for the game.

Traditionally, we have always gone with random and I don't see us changing that. But if after a lengthy discussion we decide to include certain Civ Tribes by an overwhelming agreement, this discusion will have been worth it.

Below please post your choice for RANDOM or list the Civ Tribes you feel should be our opponents.

Random.

Great topic, Cyc. Thanks for bringing it up. :goodjob:

For an exciting game, I would like to consider the possibility of including as many militaristic opponents as possible. But then again, we would lose the discovery aspect of the game if we predetermined too much.

So if push came to shove, I would probably go with Random.

Random.

Being a proponent of the CHD, I would like to query the group as to the best mix of nationalities from the CHD perspective. It may remove some of the surprise to the demo game, but it could enliven the CHD stories.

For instance, since we are the French, how could we have a world without the English to look down our noses at?

What would a French world be without the Americans to have deep and utter distain for?

Good point amirsan. As I said I just wanted to make it official. You don't have to discuss it if you're not inclined to.

As one of the founders of the CHD, I must state for personal reasons, that for me the different nationalities in the Civ world are just AI. I like that about the game, as I don't have to key on racist or bigot ideals (don't get me wrong, TM90. I'm not calling you either one). I key on a name with tribal traits that have strengths and weaknesses. To me it's more of a situation of calculating numbers to come up with the best odds. Therefore I can't see pre-setting a mix of nationalities in hopes of generating subplots for the CHD.

Having said that, I do recognize historical coincidences as they may occur in my games at random, so I can see your point. But I would rather not set up a situation intentially where we seek to duplicate history. Just let it happen.

BTW, I voted for Culturally Linked Starting Locations to be off.

Give me all random opponents. Though I think we should include Egypt, just to fulfill Stuck's France vs Egypt gruge match ;).

Are we using culturally linked starting locations?

Well, in DG1 I belive we did. Persia with Greek, Egyptian, and Roman neighbors. In DG2, I'm not sure, but as the Germans we shared our part of the world with two other Militaristic Tribes (Japan and Azteca). In DG3, I belive we chose against culturally liked starting locations and still ended up as the Romans (random) surrounded by the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Persians. So you tell me.

CG, I think you're correct in that it might be interesting if there was an Egypt and they gave us a run for our money. Egypt as an opponent can be a strong rival.

i would have thought random would have been the best option. if we know th civs before hand that gives us time to perhaps prepare for them, this takes away the discovery aspect of them game.

I have a different opinion. If I interpred your remarks about the Babylonians' behaviour in DG1 and DG2 (in which I wasn't present) and DG3, it seems we hate them.

DG1: Babs started a Domino war.
DG2: again something bad (I can't remember what was said about it)
DG3: They tried with spies to destroy our Spaceship.

Let's have the Babs as an opponent. On one hand for the long overdue "corrective measurements" and on the other hand: "They might be our friends/allies for once".

Can some DG1 and DG2 veteran explain or correct what unspeakable acts the Babs did then ?

The rest I prefer "random".

yes they were a cause of the domino war, however there is no reason to suggest that the same things will occur in this game and personally i would not want to be allied with the babylonians anyway if just because their culture is going to be very strong. therefore we will probably have to take many of their cities by military means anyway.

I think Rik's point is the Babs would provide an instant "Born Enemy" due to history. Not because "The will act the same again" but it adds to the Role play.

Those from the other DG's can have fun transfering over the suspicion from the other DG's into this one.

I think having the Babs might not be a Bad Idea, or the Americans even, not as much bad blood there though.

Rik's other point is our hate for Babylon might be turned around if they do prove to be a valuable and reliable Ally. I wouldn't mind a few selected Rival nations, but MOST should be Random, Babylon and America are the two which come to my mind.

@ Rik Meleet ~

BCLG100 is correct about DG1. The Babs declared war on us during the begining of the game because we didn't fork over our map according to their demand. They then started the snowball effect of the Domino War I. You can read about it in the History section of the Demogame website.

In DG2, The Babs really didn't do anything wrong, except protect themselves well. :D They were very strong in the Culture Department (as always), so they were a major threat to us there, as they had almost twice our Culture. Which is why we attacked them. ;)

DG3 ended with an attempted sply planting by the Babs (either a nuclear device or sabotage was suspected). Other than planting a Settler or two on our domain, they really din't do anything wrong here, either.

You're refering to Chieftess' statement at the end of DG3 about the Babs being our nemisis . They're just a tough competitor. I don't care for them because they are always such a Culture threat to us.

I like the idea of having the Babs for opponents. Didn't they even start a war during the final DG1 chat? I seem to recall something about radar artillery and Babylonians...

Anyway, why not pick a specific opponent or two and have the rest be random?
