However, a black man can make a song based on racist lies and have a number one hit. That seems unfair in a society in which people are supposedly struggling for equality and multi-cultural diversity.

Thats exactly what I meant.

Also sex and money.

Oh, and a little politics

You think the innocent [and not so innocent] lyrics of the 60s and 70s didn't have their meanings? for example, the Beatles: "She took me half the way there now" jumps straight to the top of my brain for some reason...

Rock is at least more subtle about it. Anyway, I wouldn't say all rock is about money; in fact, alot of genres hate people who sell out and embrace money and the rich culture.

Anyway, sex lyrics in rock are usually more subtle. Like the Beatles quote you said.*

At least, unless you count "Big Bottom". :p

* OK, so that qoute isn't very subtle. But its more subtle than "Light that ass on fire" or "Get Low".

ya is all wack, I dont get what's sooooo wrong, if you dont like it then dont, I dont care, I know some raps are stupid but they supposed to be! Its club bangers! You go to a club you see everyone jumpin!

Anyways, my whole school likes rap, (boys and girls) only some who are quiet and skateboarders like rock and all that stuff...

THOSE are the words I was looking for! :goodjob:

I hear people *****ing all the time about modern music and how much it sucks. Bah I say to them. Yesterdays music always sounds better because we have filtered out the crap and only the good stuff is still being played today. Today just like all times there is a bunch of crap made but also alot of really good stuff. I don't like most hip-hop but I do like some. Missy Elliot's Under Construction is a really good cd. And although 50 cent and Em and Em annoy me they do produce some good music.

I personally am very into electro-clash right now, lot's of really good music being made.

People will always whine about music, about whether it's a sell out or too main stream or whether the music is too easy to play or whether the artists lipsynch their live proformaces etc....

All that is bull**** and you shouldn't care about it in the first place. If the song sounds good then it's good music. If it makes you wanna dance, or cry, or yell etc.... then it's good music. Who cares if you hate the image or style of the artist or if they are doing pepsi commercials. If they make good music that you like to hear that's all that matters.

Every music style takes some adjusting to get used to. Your brain is not at first familiar with the rythems, patterns and themes in a new style so the music sounds foreign and a jumble in your head. I have found that while alot of other music focuses on a melody with a beat accomponing it, hip-hop is the opposite. The melody accompanies the beat and this is why I believe so many do not like hip-hop, it sounds different and it takes a while before your brain can get in the groove.

I have mixed feelings about hip-hop. I'd have to be a total idiot not to recognize that the greatest musical tradition of all time is that of blacks; not to recognize the enormous effect their music has had on American and world music as a whole, producing such revolutionary genres as rythm, blues, swing, jazz, and the greatest of them all, ROCK [even if it did take some country and British influences to bring it to its zenith in the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, etc]; but when I see some of the crap they are turning out today under the name of "hip-hop", "rap", etc, I want to tell some of them to take up the harmonica - if it's not too hard - and get back to the mic when they know something about making MUSIC!

Between the pretentious and unlistenable noise of "ghetto" musicians, the whining and trite wailings of bubblegum "pop" harlots, and the unimaginative moanings of "boy bands" that can't seem to turn out anything that would seem modern and original to a guitarist from the 70s, modern music is really going down the drain. And there's no Musical Messiah on the horizon either, the kind that pop up whenever musical traditions get cliched to "mix things up a bit" - Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Stravinsky [here classical music falls in a jumble of dissonant avante-garde pretensions, but popular music takes up the thread:] the Harlem Renaissance and all the great Jazzers, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Lennon/McCartney, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin... and there the dynasty fails. We haven't produced original music worth the name since 1979. IMHO, of course.

Well, I certainly agree that a lot of Hip-Hop is pure crap. Especially nowadays. Actually most of rap isn't even Hip-Hop. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the people here would really like Canibus. Don't let the name fool you. He's not a guy who raps about getting stoned. I've actually learned quite a bit from the man. How many rappers do you know who rap about cloud chambers, Kaluza-Klein(sp?), Huxley vs. Wilberforce, super string theories and so on. I think he watches a lot of Science Channel, History Channel and so on.:) And to top it all, he joined the military. Yes, a rapper born in Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn joined the military AFTER he recieved fame and fortune from rap. If anyone even halfway enjoys Hip-Hop, BUY his album Rip The Jacker. It is definitely a classic.

On Topic: I will not be watching the Sauce Awards due to the fact that they are sell outs. I still rock the hoodie and backpack.

Yeah, it totally disrespects women.

You're kidding me! And what do you think "Run For Your Life" is, eh? ;) A tribute to the fairer sex?

Yesterdays music always sounds better because we have filtered out the crap and only the good stuff is still being played today.

There were also more thoughtful, more talented artists back then.

Some of these guys are DEAD and they're STILL topping the charts over LIVE musicians whom music companies are spending piles of moolah to hype. Doesn't that say something?

The melody accompanies the beat

That's exactly what makes it WRONG.

In the early days of rap and hiphop there were artists who focused on the melody and still made a "good groove", as you say. Today most "music" on rap CDs [ie, what isn't banging stuff or speaking] is stylized, formulaic, cliche, easily tiring. The whole point is to fit it within the beat instead of fitting the BEAT to the MUSIC. Most of these "melodies" my little sister could write.

There's plenty of room for a nice lead line AND an innovative beat [Another Beatles example! "Ticket to Ride"]. Most artists today just don't wanna take the trouble.

Canibus is neat :D

Too bad he can't put out a decent album or find a good producer.

That is the knock on him. But you really should give "Rip The Jacker" a listen. He had Stoupe from Jedi Mind Tricks produce the whole album and it sounds amazing. I don't know what the last album you've heard but if you haven't heard this one you should check it out. He is just know hitting his prime.

Who listens to Gorillaz? I've been downloading some of their stuff lately. Its hip-hop (most of the time) done by a guy from Blur, so its bound to be creative. :crazyeye:

I reccomend their famous "Clint Eastwood" or "Tomorrow Comes Today". And if you want some crazier stuff, get "Left Hand Suzuki Method" or "Double Bass". Or if you want catchy but eventually tiring pop, get "19-2000".

Those are all songs, BTW, not albums.

@ Pontiuth: I hope you're referring to some kind of rap artist...:nono: ;)

EDIT: I almost feel ashamed saying I listen to an animated band that seems more gimmick then real, but they are pretty good...

EDIT 2: Although their last two albums have been remixes of the first, I wonder if they are still even working on albums. Oh well, I'll wait for another White Stripes CD and Pinkerton Part II. :D

I listen to Gorillaz! I would never invest a dime in buying their album, but if their video comes on I'm there.

Do you know if they're making a new album or if they are done?

I don't even think they are working on one. There is one from '02, but there isn't any other news on another one. :(

Ironic that you condemn me for stealing music when, if I hadn't "stolen" their songs I never would have heard of them or even considered buying their upcoming CD. Or purchased three Radiohead CDs, or three White Stripes CDs, or one Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD...lets see, what else did I buy this year...

Anyway I've been to that site, its too confusing for my taste. I want straight news posts. ;)

There's nothing ironic about it. Turn on the radio and listen and you will hear the same crap you bought.

Anyways that's another thread (which has been done 2520872 E7 times already)
