There are many valuable FF in the game but my favourite would have to be Peter Minuit. He is available early in the game and reduces the cost of recruiting units in Europe by 25%, so my first galleon costs me 2250 gold instead of 3000.

It took me a while to realize that I actually better skip the crappy ones. And sometimes these are hard choices. Aside from Cabral and Minuit, I like Coronado because he greatly changes the strategy on the field of battle.

Personally, my philosophy regarding FFs sometimes isn't "I want this FF to bolster my X stat". Instead it sometimes is "I want this FF so my opponents don't get him!" :p

This being said, Pedro Alvares Cabral is one of my favorite FFs to get first, to avoid a pesky opponent getting a head start in trading before me. For a similar reason, I don't invest much in religious FFs, I'd prefer my foes take them and waste their precious points whilst I scoop the really nice Exploration, Trade and Political FFs.

To be honest, most of the time I play COL with the AOD2 Mod. Using the Mod, the FFs change substantially, and their bonuses and order of appearance make for a more balanced game IMHO.

In AOD2 I have a definite favorite FF: John Harvard. Free Large School in all bases, and +50% books everywhere makes training specialists much easier, specially considering that the education system of AOD2 is a lot better than the original Colonization one.

Put me down for Peter Minut as well. As Dalgo mentioned he's available quite early, and that 25% off training units really pays off in a huge way. I also really don't involve much effort if cross production, so I don't get many free specialists that way.

And the guy (can't recall his name right now) who rpovides +1 movement for your ships is pretty darn useful.

There are many good ones, but if I had to prioritize, this would be my list:

    1. Peter Minuit
If I had to pick one, it would be Minuit. 25% off all specialist throughout the game is pretty awesome.

    2. Cabral
Cutting the travel time to Europe in half is extremely helpful in the long run. If one can get Bermudez as well, it's possible to achieve a constant flow of goods to and from Europe using only 3 ships.

    3. Coronado
Because he is vital in my strategy for winning the WoI.

    4. Pocahontas, Williams, Penn
Combined with culture bombing nearby villages to remove negative points for "Your way of life is threatening to ours" this will keep the natives off your back and turn them into valuable allies against your opponents.

    5. Lewis & Clark
Extremely helpful for the overall logistics.

Without a doubt, Samuel Adams. The higher the taxes, the more bells you make. This means you don't need to throw parties, as you'll make even more bells than before, and that also makes your forces stronger. The only bad thing is that the expeditionary forces also grow larger with him, as they grow proportionate to the bell production.
