Why 2050?

Civ1 and Civ2 ended in 2020, IIRC.

They choose 2050 because it's a nice round number that is in the nearish future. The Activision Call to Power games ended in 2300 or something like that, and go into the far future.
 
Also this should probably be in one of the Civ threads. :)

2050 is a nice looking number.

Also, it's not too far in the future that the developers would have to meddle too much in the realms of science fiction, but sufficiently far in the future to give the player a sense of leading their civilization beyond the modern (ie familiar) age, and so that colonizing Alpha Centauri is less of an unrealistic possibility. I think.
 
Because 2050 is the date when the US finally becomes a puppet of the Sino-Indian Empire?
