Why am I too slow?

Thanks so much Nares and revelation216! I do most of what you're saying except selling buildings and 'loaning' gold. I'm still not sure how that works, actually.

Pillaging your own land - I had never thought of that!

I try for DoF asap, but they usually turn me down. Most of the time I have to wait for them to ask me. If I offer an extra resource of mine for free, do they agree more readily?

I tried it last night and it looks like you can't pillage with the worker only remove so have a unit ready on top of the worker with 1 turn left to build the improvement.

With DoF I will experience the same phenomenon of having to wait for it to be offered. I believe there's a fixed number of turns after meeting a civ before it is allowed and the AI does not skip a beat on it.

I've never gotten one to agree to a DoF at my suggestion. While that's true of all AIs, some are more eager to offer a DoF than others. I suspect flavor is the overriding factor; some AIs require massive +diplo modifiers before they'll offer a DoF to the human. The likely reason for this is that these AIs are, for the most part, warmongers; the high threshold for DoF with them is probably meant to keep them from being neutered.

Generous trade agreements (ie massively overpaying for a resource, or giving a resource for free), probably do generate some +diplo, more if they've come begging. However, the AIs who will readily offer DoF don't need that kind of special treatment, whereas the AIs who are more stingy require much more than some free resources.

AI sometimes agrees to DOF, but only if you were friends in the past and it has expired at some point.
