Why are machine guns considered artillery?

    WWI there were entire battalions of machineguns, they were a part of the regiments, and could attach companies to the infantry battalions as needed, or could be employed as a whole unit. WWII still saw the use of mg companies that developed into the weapons company (mg, mortar, anti-armor)concept that is used still today. Anti air is a seperate specialty (at least in the USMC, they belong to the wing, not the grunts) but again, they can be detailed to support a specific unit.

    In my mind, each unit in Civ is a battalion equivalent for land units and squadrons for naval & air units.
