i didnt do nuttin! i swear!

im playing on a large map with 6 other civs and one of them is the aztecs. i am (was, you'll see why its past tense in a minute) more powerful than them and they made a demand for contact with such and such civ. i of course say no, im not giving in to demands from a weaker civ. so they started s4ending jaguar warriors a couple at a time to my cities to annoy me. whatever. then they get the celts to sign a MA with them. ok still whatever, they're even further away than the aztecs and are no threat to me. then they get my neighbor india to sign a MA with them. ok thats it, ive had enough. i sign a MA with russia, carthage and the netherlands agaisnt india, the celts and the aztecs. the only reason why i did it was to keep the aztecs from enlisting any more help.

so i had knights and wiped india off the map, sucks to be ghandi. then i got cavalry and went after the aztecs. at first i let them come to me then i went and razed a couple of monte's cities to see if he'd change his mind...it didnt. so i wiped him off the map too.

now the netherlands and russia signed treaties with a couple of the other civs and broke our MAs, so they take a rep hit. i break no deals with anyone and somehow...everyone is furious with me. yeah i had a war that lasted about 400 years maybe more with the aztecs and yeah i wiped two civs off the map but i didnt provoke anything. no sneak attacks, no ROP rape. i did disband every captured worker though.

and to top it off russia wanted to park one of its swordsman in my territory and after seeing this for a few turns i told them get out or declare war. i had already killed off india and the aztecs and i have nothing better to do with 100+ cavalry...so we went to war, i razed a city and catherine lost her thirst for blood.

so why is everyone mad at me? is it the agressiveness level i set to high?

Eventually everyone gets mad at number one. You have thigns they want and you don't give them to them, such as lux/tech/resources.

You raze cities and they do not like that either. All sort of little things add up over time. 6 civs to too few for a large map should be at least 10.

the thing is i do try to trade whatever i have to the others. heck i even gave techs to russia carthage and the netherlands during our MAs. i have an active trade with carthage for a luxury and im giving them a strategic resource (iron) and GPT and they're annoyed with me.

i even gave the celts a tech and they're just annoyed rather than furious.

and i am giving them 1 gold a turn to try and get them to lighten up. so far it hasnt worked.

oh well. i actually dont have much in resources, only two luxuries and iron and coal. no rubber (its nowhere near me) and they seem to have the luxuries.

i dont care if they are furious its just i havent seen all the civs made at me like this before. usually its just one civ thats cranky and bent out of shape.

• "then i went and razed a couple of monte's cities"
• "i did disband every captured worker though."

Not only is this behaviour exceptionally wasteful (to say the least), it also creates serious attitude issues.

If you were giving luxes to the AIs to sign alliances, and the alliances end because the target is extinct, that counts as a broken trade from memory, which will toast your rep nicely.

most the MA's gad already been broken by my supposed allies by the time i killed off india. and the rest were broken by my supposedly allies before i killed off the aztecs.

but isnt that what MAs are for? to kill off a third civ???

i dont think two humans would be too mad at tyhe other if they formed a MA and the third civ perished in the process.

why would a civ get mad because the civ we had a MA against was wiped out? seems ******** to get mad over losing a civ you were fighting against.

i hated them so much i wasnt about to keep their cities or their workers around.

i must have disbanded 40 workers...lol oh well what are the rest gonna do? none are in a position to do anything about it anyway.

beautiful how people can get so emotionally involved in their games :)

I'm starting to feel that way about the Babs in every game. If I don't destroy them quickly, they always become a thorn in my side, a fly in my ointment, a spoiler before I watch my taped sporting event.

I love playing the Babs! Cheap libraries and temples build up culture, and it allows more $$ for knights and calvary. And the knights and calvary bring me the Great Wonders that increase culture. It's a great cycle of life.

I have not seen this in Civ3, it was a bigger problem in earlier games.
Now I am the undisputed no #1 at everything and have all kinds of resources everyone else lacks. I am not having MA's or MPP's but most oponents are polite with me. I think I have razed 3 enemy cities and started a war maybe ~5 times.

Razing is of course a big deal, see it as a war crime.

Why on earth would you disband slaves? There's no upkeep and you can NEVER have too many of them. I've never had an occasion where there wasn't a road to build or a jungle to clear. If you're already railroad, keep them around for pollution cleanup.

There is no reason to EVER disband a slave.

Unless you've got too many slaves. And you've reached the unit limit, right? Also, if you want to quick rush something in a settlement (You disband the slave for 2 shields and rush at less than half the price than the original rush taking 1 turn instead of 2 to rush at half the price).

I useally keep Slaves around, can't live without 'em.

nothing better to start a city without some fresh slaves(they do all the 'civilian' work while my original workers return to their native city and become Conscripts)

There is a city limit, but not a unit limit. (past the upkeep limit, you have to pay gpt upkeep, but as long as you have enough income, you can always have more units.)

And slaves don't count toward the upkeep limit. They cost 0 gpt upkeep. They work at half speed, but that only means you have to use 2 slaves for every one native. Disbanding 40 slaves is thus a waste of 20 gpt for the rest of the game.

And for the ones that get emotional:
What was that quote again? "don't wish the death of your enemy, make him wish it!" I read it in someones sig around here. :p

well in a new game i went to war with egypt (she picked the fight) and i razed a few of her cities, i did keep the slaves though.

but the maya and the mongols are not happy. first everyone was polite, now i cant the maya above cautious and i cant get the mongols above annoyed.

i've given just about everything i can, GPT, luxuries, maps, i think even a tech or two. they're just not happy with me.

its not my fault she came to me with a demand and declared war when i said no. maybe razing her cities wasnt "defensive" but she soon learned her lesson not to mess with hiawatha! i went on a war path.

i am learning how to keep them from getting furious with me though. but i hate giving them 10 gold just to bump them from cautious to polite. still no gracious...and im trying real hard to get at least one civ to become gracious. even giving three techs doesnt work, currency monarchy and republic didnt do it.

there is a limit to how much gifts can help. basically, you get an attitude bump for every 10 gold you give, up to 100 gold - or it's equivalent.

so, giving 1 tech or 3 techs wont' change attitude.

Razing any cities is an attitude hit - even autorazing.

are they in the same government as you? that's a rep hit.

Having active trades will help.
Make an embassy with them.
Trade them a resource.
have an ROP or a MP pact with them
Build a culture lead
