Why are workers building forts over all my resources?!

My Workers have gone ******ed! I have "leave forests alone" checked and "leave previous improvements alone".

I set a few workers to auto and lost track of them. Recently I look at my little secondary continent, and they have just butchered my land with forts.

Is this a known bug?

First: A fort can "collect" a resource and since a mine for example is useless out of range from a city, the AI thinks it is better to build a fort to collect the resource.

Second: I think that if the AI has nothing more important to do with a worker, he build forts on various places.

Third: Since a worker that is set on auto are controlled by the AI, he does the above steps.

I do think the AI builds a little to much forts. I usually don't have them on auto until after I have built my railroads, then I don't care how much forts the AI builds on waste tiles.

Still a pain though, cos now your enemy gets a 50% defence bonus when he camps on your resource.

If Ive said leave them alone, the AI shouldnt knock down my farm to build a fort.

Don't you defend your forts?

And yes, you cannot have the option "leave old improvemetns" off nowadays, if you do, you will have forts all over the place. I tried it during the first BtW game* I played, but suddenly I had forts high, low, left, right, everywhere. The AI really likes them.

*I use to allow workers to alter old improvements in the other civ versions when I come to the modern times.

Dont you defend your forts
MY forts I do, but not the stupid AI forts.

If I have a contested boarder, then I select where to put my forts, based on defencive considerations, not the fact that there is Rice there

They shouldn't receive the defensive bonus if the forts are in your cultural borders. If they do, this is a bug.

You mean if I rush in and accupy one of their forts I dont get a defencive bonus?

According to the civlopedia, no you will not get the bonus. It's an easy test in worldbuilder though, I'm not near the game right now to try it though.

Forts are not supposed to provide the defensive bonus if they're not in your territory.
