Throwing a question to all of you who believe in the existence of God/a god/The FSM/religion in general. Why so? Were you raised a theist? Were you disillusioned by non religion? Was it the in thing at the time? Or did you simply not know otherwise?

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=350270

The thread title was asking for it.

Discus:

To be totally honest, I'm a theist because I've felt.. well.. How do I put this.. I've felt the presence of a supernatural being working in my life. Despite all the crap that I've been put through, despite my family almost being torn apart, and despite me walking alone on a dark road, I've found that when I asked for help, I got it.

Now my second question.. Is religion such a taboo/ridiculous topic here? Hmm?

Discussion of theism vs atheism is beating a dead horse here.

it is more of a folkway than a taboo.

Folkway - Man walks down the street with no shirt - people shrug and say "*that's not right" But otherwise don't care to much.

Mores - Man walks down the street with no pants on - Man is arrested and charged with crime, may serve time. Otherwise, he is still deemed fit to live in society.

Taboo - Man kills and eats another man. This is a Taboo, the sort of thing that makes someone totally unfit to live in a society (according to the society).

Please only refer to things as taboo if they really are taboo in order for us to have a clear discussion.

* Except ripped up totally sexy dudes like me amiright?

is religion a serious topic?

I guess that to the approximately 5 billion people in the world who do follow a religion, it is.

Meh.. Fair enough. I'm new to this place anyway, and since I didn't see anything relating to religion on the front page I decided that perhaps there could be room for a discussion. Not the "OMG ur an atheist so ur going 2 hell lololol" sort of discussions but more civilised and with an exchange of knowledge. Guess I'm wrong. I could ask the mods to kill the thread but judging by your verdict of the forum mentality here I estimate it'll drop to second page and beyond within the next few hours (unless something DOES happen).

And pics or you're lying.

I'm well aware of my own existence

Religion is a perfectly suitable topic for OT and it comes up regularly. There are strong opinions for and against. all we ask is that folks be civil about it and not attack people for their beliefs or lack of them.

Nothing is really a serious discussion around here, and religion doesn't get any handicaps when we're discussing it.

Having said that, there are serious discussions to be found. The 2 I can think of are "Ask a Theologian" and "Ask a Mormon". If you are sensitive, most other religion-based threads will likely contain comments that offend you in some way.

It don't matter. The world is quite screwed up anyway. Time I got that into my thick skull. My personal opinion is, if you offend, at least have a good reason to do so.

Nah.. I mean, some people will get offended if I tell them that Jesus wasn't the son of God.. and another group of people will get equally offended if I tell them the opposite.. On a forum with members from all over the world, you can't really tailor-PC your message as to not offend anyone. Say what you will, don't have any vile intentions, and that's the best you can do.

Besides, nobody has the right not to be offended.
