Why can't we ever play as the Barbarians?

I think this would be a pretty interesting feature to the add to civ6 at come point.

Instead of choosing a civ, you can play as barbarian tribe EI the goths.

Also, whatever happened to barbarian cities?

    Cheers.

Sounds like a good idea for a mod

It would be pretty much impossible on certain difficulties though

I guess they're supposed to be a placeholder for a civ you haven't met yet. Personally I think they ought to just disappear after the world map is explored.

That used to be a thing back in the day.

Sid Meier was the leader of the barbarians. :D

Civilization IV has a scenario like that in one of the expansions. Warlords, I think.

:) And as lorrydriverjr, there was also a mod for Civilization V.

I'd be surprised if no one made such a mod for Civilization VI too.

I won't find it fun playing as all the barbarians, but it would be fun to be a specific group and you can only occupy other cities to gain food/gold and build advanced units, but the city burns down (not razed, just disabled and all tiles pillaged) so you must always be on the move to conquer more cities. Only way to win is to occupy all capitals.

It'd be like Plague Inc

Barbarians are generally considered the enemies of civilization and empire-builders alike, so playing as them would rather be anti-Civilization.

Not to say that a scenario or mod or whatever can't do it, sometimes it's fun to go outside the box. But in order to go outside the box, there needs to be a box to start with.

As someone already said, there was a scenario to do just this in Civ 4. It was incredibly boring.

...what would be the purpose of playing as barbarians?

You essentially play totally generic, dumbed down version of the game (with no alternate mechanics to compensate for everything that is lost) for the short time, until you conquer some cities and become regular civilization - but without anything characteristic, unique or flavourful (so still - significant part of fun is lost).

    :goodjob:

Playing barbarians is one of those weird ideas that often return on these forums that I can never understand (as they seem to be cool at the first glance until you realize they have no depth, sense or real gain), along "succession of leaders through the game" or prehistoric era, or Hitler as a leader of German civ (this is absurd plague of YT comment section). They all also directly hit against the fundaments of the series: "play as civilisation" (well the last one to the lesser extent but I'd be willing to remove status of 'civilization' from third reich).

    Also the Civ 5 trick:

    Play as Germany
    Delete your starting settler
    Now you play as barbarians

How about forming alliances with barbarians. Use them through bribary(similiar to city-states) to help subdue an enemy Civ. Just as colonial powers used pirates to raid treasure ships of rivals. I would also like to capture barbarians and convert them into either citizens, settlers, or builders.
