I know we have a few soldiers (and ex-soldiers) here on CFC, so this thread is directed specifically at them.

Why did you join the military? Did you want the college education? Were you drafted? Were you pushed into it by friends/family? Did you think it would be an adventure? Did you think it would be easy (i.e. sitting around on a base all day)? Do you beleive in the honor and pride of the military?

I'd like to see why some of you joined because...I'm curious. ;)

I didn't join jack yet....well, almost the Marines. My cousin joined because she was interested in a military career at the time.

Why did you almost join the Marines?

This thread is aimed at posters I know who were in the military, especially those for a long time (like Padma for example). Although you can answer if you seriously considered joining the military, or know someone's motives for doing it. Or you can just post for no reason to spam. ;)

They payed for graduate school. Now I work as an indentured servant..........

It wasn't completed because...that's explained in the military service thread.

But, military career, prestige, a chance to finally get out of NYC for a while, benefits, money for college. I did my research, weighed my options.

If you join JROTC you aren't required to go to ROTC or the army at all.

I didn't join JROTC because it sucked, it required me to come into school early once a week, I had to wear a special uniform, and did I mention the drills sucked?

I think it will do me good joining the military and i'm even thinking about a military career.
Not being pushed into doing it, not drafted, i know its not going to be easy..

I have my email banner at work currently set as "An Army of One Less". That has caused some raised eyebrows and some huffing but no retaliation. Technically I am an indentured servant, they can't deny that. I sold my freedom for a few shekels to get through grad school....................Note to self "never sign contracts while drunk".........

but you'd probably be more likely to be drafted if you were in JROTC, right?

what the hell are you talkin about Sims, you dont have to do jack in ROTC, its easy as hell, weve only marched once in the past year.

lol, thats really funny Sims, u didn't join the JROTC because a war broke out? I thought everyone knew that your not signed up to join the military when ur in the JROTC? And dieing for the imperialistic ambitions is funny too. But i'm guessing our armed forces will be better off without someone with your mind set.

i know people in JROTC and they say it's a lot harder. they have to march after school, which, for me, would interfere with football/baseball practice.

JROTC in my high school was pretty hard, lots of PT, i hear the ROTC at the University i'm attending is difficult, alot more PT and some weapons training. And i'm pretty sure the chances are the same to get drafted by anyone, whether they were in the JROTC or not.

im not so everyone thinks im a slacker not far off :hmm:

but then again our JROTC is also one of the, how should i put it.......less strict in the county/state.

but yes ive also heard that univ. ROTC is a LOT harder, hence the reason im not going to subject myself to that.

but i'm funny, and our country is to cheap to keep our troops entertained in Iraq. they could have bought 300 PS2's for the soliders at the cost of one less cruise missle raining down on Iraq down on Iraq. if we had one less B-2(2 billion), we could have a PS2($150) for each solider. that way, they'd have something to do when they're in the barracks.

If i am correct, our soldiers do have entertainment areas in their living quarters. Having a PS2 for every soldier is just a little out there.

and youd just plug it into the sand and voila, insta-ps2

and when they get tired off the games they have im sure the Resistance would be more than happy to sell there extra games and memory cards

id rather have our soldiers defending the iraqi people than playing SOCOM II any day

I was drafted and served my 3 years in the US Army in Georgia and Indiana. May not sound like much, but while I was serving not a single foreign enemy launched a succesful attack against either Georgia or Indiana.
