Why does Obama need this 'civilian national security force' that is just as powerful and well-funded as the army?

Where will recruits be coming from?

Where will the money come from?

Why do we need a 'civilian national security force'

And what will they do when this 'civilian national security force' is established?

Uh, nope.

Try again.

He was talking specifically about expanding AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps and the USA Freedom Corps, which is the volunteer initiative launched by the Bush administration after the attacks of 9/11, and about increasing the number of trained Foreign Service officers who populate U.S. embassies overseas.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he is talking about the FBI/NSA/CIA/Secret Service/etc.

If not, then he is a freaking idiot.

Thats even more wierd, as the Peace Corp and AmeriCorps and USA Freedom Corps have nothing what so ever to do with national security.

That website has a liberal bias, and even if what they are saying is accurate Obama's statement is a VERY scary one.

Burying our heads on the sand will only do so much good. I think a bit of fear is a good thing to have in times like these, friend.

Essentially it's a promotion of FEUSS over a Whip economy, which I maintain is still suboptimal, and nobody wants. By having the infrastructure in place you can rush buy a lot if you need it.

Also, I'm actually going to watch the original speech, not just this excerpt, to see if what Bill or Patroklos (with no evidence) is saying is correct, but it's still streaming so I can't get to that yet.

Were you saying that before November 2008?

What? Everything's better without context!

Well, many people seem to want me to to sig "It is inappropriate to criticize the bias or selective quoting of any article posted on CFC" as something I've been convinced.

The link I posted has the quote in context.

Right, well people wouldn't shut up until they can see the full speech anyway, y'know "just having transcript doesn't reveal secret terrorist body fist-bump language":

So a pretty simple question:

Do (civilian) diplomats contribute to national security. Y/N/Downtown option?

He's referring to the concept of human security and the nexus between security and development. You can't create peace with guns and bombs alone, you need development and aid agencies as well, otherwise you just win the war and then lose the peace. Duh.

He's also referring to the fact that peace and development abroad is good for American national security interests. Less chaos and poverty = less terrorists and crime. Duh.

National Security?

Sounds a lot like National SOCIALISM!

Sorry, but national security has nothing to do with the Peace Corps or Foreign Service. That's just a White House spin on an issue they'd rather not address.

I originally thought he meant something like the Border Patrol or Minutemen. But I don't know, seeing all those radicals in his administration made me question that.

It's a White House spin that's been used for the last couple decades. Better living conditions = less people trying to kill each other = more security. Call it spin all you want, but it's used by both sides quite frequently, although obviously the neocons don't like it.

I have a question, if the world thinks America is a force of good and helps the little countries, are we going to get attacked less than when the world thinks we are a bunch of pompous, haughty and trifling monsters?

EDIT:
Rest of the speech

And we'll use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create an online network where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment, and skill sets; you'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities. This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda, and make their own change from the bottom up

"We'll send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods. We'll enlist veterans to help other vets find jobs and support, and to be there for our military families. And we'll also grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps to renew our diplomacy."

The acquisition work force ?
Never heard of the existance till now.

The acquisition work force has been in existence since 1991. President Obama, in conjunction with the DoD led by (Republican) Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, is expanding opportunities for civilians via the Civilian Expeditionary Workforce. These are NON COMBAT employees who will assist the military and end no-bid contracts to outside entities.

But there are a range of programs such as Americorps. Peace Corps, Energy Corps, etc who will work abroad and on infrastructure in the U.S.

Nah, the bill to be concerned about is the one that would mandate that IT workers become federally certified and that the administration could order the shutdown of private networks in an undefined "emergency" provision.
