Why does the game lag a lot on recommended video setting?

After starting up the demo I went straight to the video options and to my relief and pleasure the game had set all of the graphical setting to either high or medium. I decided to put all of the graphics to high and then press the default setting button again to see if it would revert back to normal and it did, so I can only assume that the game believes that my PC can handle the game with all of the setting set at medium and high.

However, after starting my first demo game the game lagged A LOT. Why is that? Do I have to update my video drivers or something? Or am I mistaken about the game automatically setting your ideal video settings for you like most games do?

Here are my specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 3.10 GHz
GPU: GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
RAM: 5GB
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Does anyone else suffer massive lag on default graphical setting?

that's weird

I have a similar setup and the game runs great for me, on high settings mind you. Don't know what your issue could be

I updated my video drivers and now for some reason it appears to run fairly smoothly.
