Because there are way too many Americans that agree with everything he said.
Errrr. No. Not in the least. His views are a very small minority.
Let's make one thing clear:
EUROPEANS (ON AVERAGE) DON'T HATE AMERICA.
Majority of them are sceptical about the US government, perhaps a bit arrogant and too culturally self-confident, they don't like certain aspects of the US society (death penalty, guns, perceived social injustice) and certain policies of the US government (Iraq, Kyoto etc.), but they don't hate America as a country.
Those who really hate it are radical lefties, Muslims and neo-nazis. But such people hate America even if they're Americans themselves, don't they?
that's it in a nutshell our european equivalent are the small, but vocal fringe groups that really hate the US. The vast majority of us don't, no matter what Colonel seems to believe.
I think Europeans hate the US because they think Americans are stupid.
Alright. I'll be honest, didn't really have an opinion ready for this thread, but if I didn't post this video I couldn't live with myself.
and the head is in AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh man, I can't stop laughing, i really didn't see that coming, I thought he was home free.
But dude really, most likely that dude ended up really messed up or dead. So ether way, maybe not the best link to post in a family friendly site such as this.
Because there's a lot of people like him. He might be the extreme, but just by reading this thread it's clear that his views aren't too alien to many Americans...
Anyway, our perception of America changes, depending on which American we are talking to. When Im talking to you for an example, Im reminded of the nice America with smart people.
But when I read stuff like:
"Don't kid your self" "keep dreaming" "That's pure nonsense" "Idiotic" Im reminded by the rude, in-your-face arrogant and ignorant American which unfortunately also exists, and when replying to him, I will automatically be smitten by a tad anti-Americanism because he just confirmed my prejudges.
I'm not sure that I agree with your premise; I don't think we hate America or all Americans - there are many Americans in these forums that I like greatly - but if it is true, I suggest that re-reading your posts will answer your question.
^ Indeed, this is why.
This is why, too.
I wish I could find the one where they showed people on the street a map with all the names switched (France was named "Iran," etc.) and hilarity ensued.
edit - that was in it
Here's a longer clip
It's seriously painful to watch.
From the first video:
Black Guy: I'm thinkin' Italy... [should be invaded next on the War on Terror]
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but seriously...
How can some people be such idiots?
The GOVERNMENT does not seem to care about anything. The people have very strong opinions, and really, we are very compassionate, both Dems and Repubs alike.
That was the Darfur Rally in Cincinnati a month ago. I am there somewhere...
As I am a teenager living in the south, I know a lot of stupid, bigoted people. Most of the kids I know at school are idiots. There are probably a higher percentage of stupid people in America than in the EU (going by something like IQ or a knowledge test). I am sure that most people in our school (including some teachers) have no idea what is going on in the world right now...
Those people in the video are on the stupid side. Yes, I know some people like that.
Thats not to say that everyone in the US is stupid, but I have a bad feeling when my generation takes over...
I wouldn't be surprised if 10% or more of the population of the USA agreed with his extreme views.
What "radical lefties" hate Americans (as opposed to the US Government)?
Anarchists and communists?
I think way less than 10%. Hell, I am in the military and I can find but maybe 1 in a 100 or more that think that way.
Most that think that way are living on a mountain top in Idaho somewhere. 10%? No way.
I don't think anyone hates America per se, not even the "radical leftist", not even the "radical muslim extremists"; what they hate is what the US state is doing in foregi. Many supposedly "anti-american" intellectuals often say that they admire American society and its social freedoms, but despise its foreign policies.
I think anti-Americanism is an extremely totalitarian concept. It sort of labels the critics even before they can say anything, much like the "antisemitism" label used by Israel. And this anti-nation label is only used in America as far as I can tell. I mean, no one comes to me saying that I am an anti-European when I critize European Union's leadership's moral bankruptcy and dangerous neoliberalism. No one would come to me saying that I am anti-Finnish for fiercly critizing Finnish leadership, etc.
But that again, I'm sure states like Nazi-Germany and Fascist Italy would've had no problem labelling dissidents as anti-Germans or anti-Italians. Or some prominent dissident as a "pathological ayatollah of anti-German hate".
I suggest you do some reading up on world history. Our spot atop the hill at the moment will not last forever. Maybe a US fall from the top won't be caused by a war of unified nations against us. But it will happen at some point. Always does...
And seriously, the reason that so many posters from abroad tend to have a negative view of Americans is because of the very type of posts they see that started this thread. The arrogance and ignorance is enough to make me not like the US at times, and I was born and raised here.
