Yes, thats right, they can;t do air superiority, just check the civiilopedia, its in the first few lines. Stealth fighters can do all missions except air superiority. this is why i think F-15s are so good. The are improved stealth fighters, and they can do all missions unlike thier lowly counterparts.
Because in real life they arent air superiority planes, they are pretty much just stealth bombers with better ability to cloak from radar because of their smaller size and engines. However they are also particularly good at precision strikes, whereas stealth bombers usually have a large number of "dumb bombs" and sometimes nuclear weapons and cruise missles.
The Stealth concept applies to missions over ENEMY territory; there is no crucial need for Stealth over one of your own cities. And America has never been bombed by MILITARY airplanes, except for one Jap plane that dropped a few bombs over Oregon in WW II after being launched from a sub. So Stealth fighters do not need to do air superiority missions over America - unless American Airlines screws up again. Point: they COULD do such if needed. They never have had to as it was never needed. And I would think they'd be pretty damn effective taking on bombers that can't see them on their radar.
Thats why we have a game editor people. If you dn't like it change it. I think this was pout in the game however to make you choose between where you put your redources late in the game. Spaceship, Culture, Military, Whatever.

No, no.. no. Stealth fighters (F-117 Nighthawks) are not equipped with any air to air weapons whatsoever, don't let the "fighter" tag confuse you. For a "true" stealth fighter, you're going to have to wait for the F-22 Raptor to come into service. As it stands, the F-117 is simply a low observable attack aircraft.
You're asking the wrong person. I suggest you do a little research on the F-117, though It's a bomber.
"The F-117A, which normally packs a payload of two 2,000-pound GBU-27 laser-guided bombs, destroyed and crippled Iraqi electrical power stations, military headquarters, communications sites, air defense operation centers, airfields, ammo bunkers, and chemical, biological and nuclear weapons plants. " - from http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-117.htm
It is probably called a fighter as it design and capabilities more resemble that of a fighter bomber than a full fledge bomber. The only difference is that this particular fighter bomber doesn't have an air intercept version. and is strictly and attack plane.
The F-15E and A-10 both are ground attack fighters (though the Eagle can carry air to air oridance as well). Hence the fighter-bomber designation tells more about the plane size and ordinace load than missions (fighters- small loads normally precision specific target strikes, bombers- huge loads, precision carpet bombing).
