Civ II was good - with expansions it was great - Remember Civ II: Test of Time - I do ;)
Civ III was good - with expansions it was great
Civ IV was good - with expansions it is great
Civ V will be good - with expansions / mods it will be great.

See the pattern. Civ 5 will become great as well. For those bashing Civ 5 because it is not as good as Civ 4, are forgetting that it took a few years for them and us modders to make it so.

Well there's really no reason for Firaxis to repeat history all over again.

Can't they ever make a game great without expansions? Just like so many other games out there that are great all by themselves?

You know the Myth series?

- Myth: The Fallen Lords - was great
- Myth II: Soulblighter - was great
- Myth III: The Wolf Age - sucked bad!!!!

some side information: ''Myth and Myth II were developed and self-published by Bungie Software between 1997 and 1999. As a result of Bungie's sale to Microsoft in 2000, the company lost the franchise rights to Take 2 Interactive.[1] Myth III: The Wolf Age was developed by MumboJumbo and released by Take Two in 2001; it received generally good reviews, though many cited a number of bugs in the initial release.[2][3]''

You see, things doesnt always get better. About the ''and it received generally good reviews'' - well everyone who I knew who played Myth 1 and Myth 2 hated 3 and continue playing myth II (still today it's played online).

Btw the myth series after III is dead and burried now.

I have this feeling I will go back to CIV IV soon.

Yes, because it's really easy to make a great game.

No, because as customers we paid money for it and therefore DESERVE to have a great game.

I didn't pay $50 for this so I have to wait for weeks, months or even years for mod teams to do the job that Firaxis should have done, or pay out even more cash to buy expansion packs just to make CIV 5 a great game.

Then why didn't you put off your purchase until the expansions come out?

But it is a great game. Maybe your game came with some defective megabits or something.

Oh, but it is a great game ;)

This game is not THAT far away from great. If I had to choose from playing a good version of Civ 5 from September to December and a great version from then on OR play a great version in December I would choose the former.

The only concern is that Firaxis doesn't patch the game quickly and appropriately. The fast patch yesterday does alleviate some concern though, and the bright side of DLC is that the developer/publisher are encouraged to make the base game good enough to sell the mini add-ons.
