Separation from those things we want, crave and desire. We bring it upon ourselves and we inflict it on others.

I think that, on the bright side, things could in theory have been far worse. I mean at least it's not the norm to have serial killers and cannibals everywhere.
And most species on earth seem to be far more factional than humans.

There's this species known as humans....
Nowhere near as factional as most other species on earth. Many of those literally kill the animal of the other faction/subtype just because it belongs to it.
That's the reason I was going to give.
Well, that and politicians who are only out for what they can take, particularly from those who can least afford to lose what they have.
(I've just done my nightly NaNoWriMo, but otherwise I've spent time on the news site and it's a damned depressing place these days)

If I were to try to boil it down to a single concept, I think it would be something like "self-centeredness" (although that sounds too mild a word to me; I haven't come up with something that quite hits what I'm aiming at, so I'll go with that for now). Greed, myopia, xenophobia, lack of empathy, fear of the unknown, a need for conformity and uniformity, reflexive antagonism: I think these are all various forms and expressions of selfishness and narcissism. Some people are quick to leap to violence - and many of those people will send other people to do it, rather than do it themselves, because they're self-centered - but most of the time that's either a reaction (e.g. fear) or a means to an end (e.g. greed). So the violence is an expression of the self-centeredness (the greed, the myopia, the need for conformity, etc).

We are merely tools for our genes, and they're driven by purely selfish motives.
But we could flip the question and ask why is there so much kindness? People who work for the well being of others. For most people it feels nice to do good, that's encouraging. There's so much suffering that's true but things would be a lot worse if nobody cared.

Competitiveness. The large and strong selfishly seize power from the wise and nurturing, and use their power to benefit themselves instead of their charges. Because of violence and a will to dominate others, to go against nature.
An example of this I can think of to look at, is think of how humans hunt. We hunt differently than other animals ... we kill the largest and strongest (because that's what our messed up way of thinking views as the best) instead of the weak and sickly. Like with a herd of deer, if you kill the main buck you can devastate that population for many many years. But men like to have their trophies ... there's no natural reason for it, but it does so much damage. We view everything as disposable to forward our own ends (even people)
And the strong won't give up their ill-gotten power easily, so it's going to take a long time before things really get better.

They usually have a reason though. Food, self-defence, protecting their young.
Hunting for pleasure when you don't need the food, accumulation of far more than you need, and killing for abstractions seem far more common in humans than other species.

Because humans are unfortunately a pain-sensitive species.
Well, some kill just cause that is what they do. Eg many types of ants will attack and kill other ants if the type is even slightly different. They often don't aim to take anything from them (eg take over a colony). So-called "military ants" are a very vicious example of this, they are nomadic and pretty much leave scores of bodies wherever they go.
Many reptiles are cannibalistic and actually will eat the young of the same species.
Wasps... does one even need to go there?
As for hunting for pleasure, there is always cats.
