If anyything, id think you would call PTW vanilla, because its new, and its suhposed to be 'better' but not everyoen thinks so...

so why is ordinary civ3 caleld vanilla?

    or am i just confused?

Because it was first (before PtW); I don't where such started (Ice cream maybe?), but the first, or original, product is now often called Vanilla. Like Civ 2 would be Vanilla, and Civ 2 ToT wouldn't be Vanilla.

Vanilla is the standard flavor (read: with minimal functions) You get charged for all extra's.

It's not just civ3, you can say it for about everything except icecream, because that's too confusing.

I had always understood 'vanilla' to mean 'standard' as in 'unmodified'. So even PTW would be the vanilla version, a mod such as DYP would be.... well, 'not vanilla'. Am I wrong here? :)

Yeah, you're wrong, since PTW adds units. So civ3 ptw is actually a modded civ3.

I disagree. "Vanilla Civ III" is the original Civ III, but "Vanilla PTW" makes sense too - it would just mean unmodified PTW.

Adlots, don't you consider vanilla to be a plain flavor? That's why standard Civ is considered vanilla; it's plain, compared to PTW. And why would something be called vanilla if it's improved? In ice-cream flavors, how is vanilla new and improved?

I think people are confused because "vanilla coke" just came out recently as a product, so it might seem like the "new thing". But I have always heard the term Vanilla as meaning "plain".

YOU'RE ALL FOOLS. The reason that it is called vanilla is because the CD and the box are vanilla colored.(I could be wrong though;))

i doubt very much if it's about the colour of the box and CD.
it is because it's the plain version, nothing extra. PTW would besomething like coconut, looks really good but it's a let down when you try it.
p.s: when i say let down i mean i don't think it is worth £20 here in the UK. not enough extra things to spice up gameplay.

Civ 3 is "vanilla" because it's the most popular Civ. :)

If I had to give PTW an ice cream flavor, it would be "bubble gum," because it looks really appealing, but when you take a bite and chew on it (and chew on it some more), you realize you're much better spitting it out again.
