A question for the Brits on this board...

Why does Stella Artois have the nickname "Wife-beater" in the UK?

I just read in a Belgian newspaper an article about a court case in England where the judge, in a case of severe domestic violence, put the blaim on two things: Stella and binge-drinking.
I'm not a huge fan of Stella myself (I prefer Jupiler), but what the heck???

As a result, Inbev, the company that makes Stella Artois, is gonna launch a huge advertising campaign in the UK to get rid of the bad reputation.

The Wiki entry has the following to say:
"The name and brand have been absorbed into popular culture and it is believed that it earned its nickname "Wifebeater juice" from the film A Streetcar Named Desire after the character Stella, Stanley Kowalski's abused wife."

Because it's standard fare for chavs, and it has a reputation for making people violent

Edit: Damnit Till, you ruined a perfectly good chance to make someone look like a fool.

Wiki is spouting nonsense.

It's called wifebeater because it seems to make people aggressive. I used to know a girl who became a psycho after two stellas, but could knock back a bottle of red and be charm personified.

That explenation is crap.

Nope... I think before I post (unlike some other posters)

Stella tastes great, but is expensive as hell here. No reputation as berserker potion, I dont honestly know what it could make it different then any other alcoholic beverage.

Exactly, I mean I thought beer has only 4 ingredients. I might be wrong though.

It's also not that particular strong: 5,2% alcohol I think.

We have beers in Belgium that contains 11 to 12% alcohol.

No doubt there are many hundreds of Belgian beers that would alter your mood (and challenge your palate) faster than Stella. I think any correlation with wife-beating must come from self selection. People who think it's cool to drink Stella are lower forms of human life with poor impulse control.

truth in statistics.

Same reason everyone else gave tbh, it's just generally portrayed as the drink of choice of wife beaters-streetcar named desire/any other tv show/movie that has wife beating in!

It's not that expensive as a crate, i got 18 cans for the same price as 24 fosters in morrisons the other week, seeing as everyone only drinks fosters as a last resort/because they've done something wrong and need to be punished i thought it was quite a good deal! :)

That's ridiculous, guys. Why would Stella make Brits violent, but not Belgians or French?

Maybe there's a "reputation", but you can't seriously think it's justified, it flies in the face of all reason.

Maybe it's because fat slobs drink Stella in their wifebeaters. That's a type of vest IIRC.

Question about Stella is already answered, thought I would add my agreement that Fosters is absolutely horrible, bloody aussie imports.

They don't drink it either apparantly!!!! why they force us to brew it in the UK and then force us to have to buy it is beyond me!

To be fair in quite a lot of student bars its that or carling which is a case of 'which bollock would i like chopping off?'

Ahwell gets you gone if you can stand the taste and can drink enough of it!
