I have a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT graphic card, which at the time when I installed it was supposed to be the best thing around. but that's 2-3 years ago. and I am wondering if it would be wise of me to upgrade it? and will civ 4/bts (ROM mod) run faster? I have 6 giga byte ram (don't ask me why lol) and plenty of space. the computer itself is around 6 years old, but updated when I installed the graphic card.
what is the best graphic card for gaming?

You won't gain much, even if you upgrade to the fastest cards (gtx 580 / radeon 69**). Maybee the UI will respond slightly faster when you have to select lots of units, not sure about that it's just an assumption (on my previous pc, some UI functions where laggy unless i lowered the details level).

It depends of course on your CPU if a gfx-card upgrade would make sense maybe for other games. It's probably better to save up, build a completly new system and sell the old one.

Also keep in mind that a fast gfx card draws more power, so you may need a stronger power supply.
