The universe is going to expand into a low density soup of low energy photons. There will be no collapsing into itself.

Thats one of many theories to the end of the universe.

At least its better than one where God said "Oh boy, I'm tired of this game, time to start a new one" *bloop*

I don't agree. Otherwise why would every culture known either invent a religion or adopt one from another culture?

You don't *need* religion. It isn't a drug. It just makes you feel better is all.

Who usually benefits from the invention of a religion?

Well, Jesus didn't benefit a whole lot from Christianity...

    But I understand your point.

Because humans are afraid of the unknown, and when you don't have any other answers you'll listen to anyone who can ease your conscious.

Why do you think there are more atheists than ever before today? People get less superstitious as society develops.

That doesn't account for all those people who ignore the answers and turn to religion anyway. That'd continue, even if we had all the answers.

Religion will die when humanity becomes extinct. However, I believe it will continue to decline...or to put it another way, the percentage of people who are atheists will continue to grow.

I agreed with that in my OP, it's just that those people will become even more of a minority.

Plus kids of religious nutjobs are more likely to rebel and become atheists anyways.

Some, yes. Enough for religion to die out? No chance. I'll believe it when I see it and not before.

You're forgetting that there may be other intelligent species out there, worshipping stuff. I guess that's a bit of an unknown, so you might be right there after all.

Would be interesting to study an extraterrestial culture. Do they have religions too? Is religion a universal constant, or are humans just freaks?

Maybe it's only a phenomenon that arises in social species? Would be very interesting to study alien species in that regard. Too bad it will likely never happen :(

On a tangent, I wonder if dolphins/chimpanees/pigs/elephants/whatever think that God exists.. or if they have any thoughts about where they came from and what the Universe is.
