If the whole world is at war against 1 civ, and you have military alliance with all other civs against it, and you use the NUKE?

Yerp. No matter what the circumstances, if you use nukes, then your reputation will suffer...

You may get a rep hit, but they won't go to war with you.

They will if they have units beside the city/square you are attacking...

Now, why would you nuke your allies?

You wouldn't, you would be nuking an enemy city, and the ally may have a unit/units outside it. You wouldn't know this ofcourse because of the fog of war ;)
Or you could just be a weirdo... :mischief:

If they have units next to the city your nuking a popup will come saying do you really want to attack the Name of Civ?

I've always wondered why they created the nuke if you are never supposed to use it... I know most of use would say for the noobs... but, honestly, when's the last time a pro used a nuke? I feel teased now when I get to the modern age because I won't use a nuke and neither will the AI... so what's the use building it?

Also what is a sucessful strategy for using a nuke?

I'm not a pro, but I often use them. The strategy is to get everyone whose opinion you care about into an alliance against the target. (Yes, this implies if you don't care about anyone's opinion you can use them freely).

I haven't used them in Conquests, but in Civ3 a while back, I ran some tests and had my "allies" sometimes declare war on me after I used them on another civ, and they didn't have any units near the nuked cities.

It will declare war on civ A because it struck first and you can freely strike civ A without worrying about other civs declareing war because Most of the other civs will also declare war on civ A.

Exactly my point... a sucessful strategy does not involve a nuke unless you've got enough to bomb every city on the planet for a world domination, and even then its difficult to mobilize your troops for a domination victory against the rest of the world.

Why do countries have nukes in real life? Becuase they don't want anyone to nuke them. If they know that you have nukes, then they won't nuke you becuase they know you'll just nuke them back. I don't know if this would apply to civ 3 though. Maybe the AI just won't nuke you no matter what. Or maybe they don't even pay attention to whether you have nukes of your own or not.

...????

But in Civ3, there aren't the same consequences. You can nuke England to hell and back, and then just save yer game and have dinner :)

As for the real life thingie, it gives people a feeling of power. Only a few countries in RL have nuclear weapons/capability, and thus, they/we can bully the ones which don't :satan:

The AI will most definitely use retaliatory nukes after you nuke them

Sorry, Warp, but that's incorrect.

I once had a solid wartime alliance, that had stood the test of time, and I nuked one city of our mutual enemy. My longtime best buddy immediately declared war on me.

I was offended, and went back to a save and instead of nuking anyone, i dropped it on a deserted tile. Same thing, my ally turned on me, and this time, a neutral civ did too.

So I assumed that any first strike is instant pariahood.

Well, I've done it many times without them going to war. I guess the criteria is more complex than that.
