Will this graphics card do the trick?

I'd get a gtx 460, they go for around 170 on newegg, or higher with more ram.

Yea the GTX 460 is a beast, I went from two 5770s to two MSI 460s, they are like having a pair of 5870s for half the cost (Much better scaling than crossfire).

But I think that will be too much for someone that was considering getting a 5550.

If the 5770 is too much for you I would suggest this 5670 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125339 for a budget look on it. It doesn't differ much from the 5770 and IMHO in not worth the extra 50 bucks for the minute difference. Again this is my opinion and I have worked with ATI products for some time and feel confident that my look is very professional view. If you let us know what your budget is it would better help us guide you on the best card for the buck.

Actually, the ATI 5670 will be fine for Civ 5, but make no mistake, it is not better value than a 5770:

It does match the recommended spec of a 9800 GT.

The GTX 460 is really nice, I have a GTX 260 at the moment and when I do my annual rebuild in the next month or so the GTX 460 is at just the point on the price/performance chart I normally look for.

For those that are interested Gamestop have a bundle of the GTX 460 with Civ5. It is $40 more than the card alone at Newegg so not a bad deal especially since there is also a preorder bonus: You get a coupon to upgrade the physical Civ5 standard to a digital deluxe edition. (I'm not sure but I think this is the only time I have seen this offered anywhere other than online)

Generally speaking, from what I've heard, the HD 5570 is the best bang for your buck. $150 and capable of playing most modern games. If you want higher performance, you'll have to start forking out money for less cost efficient performance (much like how the newest highest tier cards can go up to $300-400 initially but are quickly succeeded by another better and more expensive card). Resolution sizes also make big impacts on performance of your card, so you will want to do research on that.

Personally I'd just go for the GTX 460 so you won't have to make another upgrade so soon. Civilization games tend not to be very GPU focused as much as CPU however; and you don't really need blazing 60 frames per second. 30 fps is optimal.

^^ 5570 for $150???

Surely you meant 5770 for $125 :p

Why get a 9600 GT when a 5670 is just a little more? That 9600 also isnt brand new and only has a 3 month warranty.

This card seems pretty good priced, but i have know idea how it would plajy civ 5? can anyone answer this? thanks

If you can get a HD 5670 for $75, neither 5550 nor 5570 nor 9600GT makes much sense ;)
And in any case you don't "need a 450W" PSU, unless you have seriously overclocked your CPU.

The 5750 and 5770s are coming down in price after the GTS450 launch, you might want to wait a few days more.

Testiethree, it's very important that you know the wattage of your current power supply. I would hate to see you spend money for a video card and not be able to run it. If you have an older computer you also need to be careful on what kind of slot it is, AGP, PCI 2.0, etc.. If you're unsure then open up your computer and find the model of motherboard and google it to see the specs.

Yes this is very important! If your not sure what kind of slots your motherboard has you can download this little program, it will list all all your computer specs.

But I don't think it list the wattage of your power suppy. For that you might have look at the back of your computer or open up the case.

Currently Nvidia cards have better tessellation performance than ATI cards and civ5 is capable of using tessellation.

I just ordered new GPU (infact i should get it today from mail:D) couple of days ago and i had two choises to go for: HD 5850 and GTX 470 (i play with 1900x1200 reso). They have almost identical price here in Finland but GTX 470 has slightly or clearly (depending from game) better performance than HD 5850 and the Nvidia cards tessellation performance is clearly better than ATIs. Yes current Nvidia cards heats more than ATI cards but i have good case for cooling and GTX 470 has a 3 years warranty.

So if someone is planning on using tessellation with something like 1600x1200 reso or bigger in their civ game, i would recommend getting Nvidia card for that purpose.
