I've played a few games lately, without finishing them. It can be a slog to actually complete games that you pretty much know you will win, you just need to do the work with wars and such. So I started another totally random Immortal Fractal game. Leader popped up as Willem, the leader I used as a crutch when starting playing the game years ago, as he has two lovely traits - which also happen to be very beginner friendly.

Financial means river cottages are instantly worth 3:commerce:, and Cultural means you can place cities without food in inner ring, knowing you'll gain it in 5 turns anyway. Cheap libraries come in handy too.

A location with more food than you can shake a stick at, which should mean a nice start.

Have a go at it if you want. I've played to around 1AD only, but it's been fun. Will I actually finish it? Who knows! :D

Don't you think that you'll possibly run into the same problem playing IMM Willem with a great start? ;)
(Ofc the first 100 turns should be a lot of fun on this map)

Because the option "choose religion" was checked. Means there is Saladin in the game (only Myst starter that will choose Islam). Not sure what the guys who don't have a favorite religion will choose though

Edit - lol cross-post with Izuul

Aye, pretty much guaranteed! :D

Deity is usually so darn stressful though. For us mortals at least ;)

Want fun with WvO? Find stone, build Pyramids and run only US (no Rep) - if fail building Pyrs, new game or replay... have fun :D

@Pangaea with this neighbour, deity can indeed become stressful ;)(for the first 80 turns or so)

@elmurcis I don't really see the point in doing that (maybe we do not enjoy the same things about this game)

Interesting map. I settled 1SW, because who needs corn in their capital when you have flood plains.

Spoiler :

Picked up gold! That's a nice surprise. Alex settled quickly in my direction and grabbed the copper. There was plenty of space to settle to the south and east though, so that went well. I went for currency, then for Optics to meet the others. Situation looked reasonable although Mansa is a strong techer. Alex invaded at some point and managed to grab my Corn+Pig city near the capital (I had Crossbows, he had big stacks). I've counterattacked, took it back and made peace. Still in the 10 turn cease fire. I've now got Trebuchets and a reasonable stack lined up to take him on. He decided to use the cease fire to declare on Sitting Bull. Interesting choice, helps me a lot.

Spoiler :
I settled 1E, who does not want to have pigs in their capital? Grabbed copper with my third city and killed Alex first thing. Weird how different the game can go from the very begenning. Tech trading only started when I met Mansa (around 800AD), still felt alright. Built GL in Athens, which made a decent GP farm, and MoM and the Parthenon in other cities. Built the Taj Mahal too and had 37 turns of a golden age with a little break. Libbed MT in 940 AD (kind of a record) and started prearations to war with Sitting Bull. He is such a pain in the neck. That git settled on the Mansa's continent preventing me from having early contact with him.

Played some more, but gave up eventually.
Spoiler :

Managed to take out Alex relatively easily in the middle ages. Tried to take out Sitting Bull but he had huge stacks and his longbows are scary. Should probably have teched to Steel to take him out

Mansa was completely running away in tech in my game and I don't think I would have been able to catch him. Teching Physics while everyone else was still in the middle ages.

I'm in my second attempt, around 1500 AD.
Spoiler :

Interesting how the same map can be so different.
I moved to the east this time, and managed to grab the copper away from Alex. Other civs did much better which meant that Mansa did not become such a juggernaut. Sitting Bull bulbed Philo leading to a relatively safe Liberalism race for me. Ramses got the Great Library. Napoleon was at war with Ramses and Mansa for a long time, which probably helped to distract them. I went Lib->Economics and then went for Rifling. Capitulated Alex and Sitting Bull using rifles (didn't have Nationalism yet so whipping instead of drafting). I've now got Steel+Rifling (and Steam Power, and recently got Military Tradition) and am setting up my units for a naval invasion of Mansa. Mansa is currently teching Electricity and has got Communism, but that won't do him a lot of good in the war. He doesn't have Rifling :)

Don't want to check out that spoiler since I haven't played that far in this game yet, but would like to play further one day. Hopefully it goes well, and you are having fun. That's the main thing.

Yes, having fun. Even got to use the East India Man and the Dike.
