I have looked all over the forum but found no answer to this question.

In which OS Civ will be more stable? Windows XP or 2000?

I'm willing to make whatever it takes in order to have a few hours of gameplaying without crashes whatsoever, including:

1) Partitioning some GBs exclusively for Civ;

2) Installing XP or 2000, whichever is more stable;

3) Downgrading either to 1.0 or 1.09, in order to use Harkonnen patch.

BTW, my specs in case it matters:

Athlon 939 3000+, 1GB RAM, GFX 5500 256 MB AGP, WXP

Thank you very much.

In theory, it shouldn't matter what OS you have running. The advantage of having XP is you can set the OS compatibility of any app back to Win NT which is more or less Win2k.
I would go with the 1.52 patch as it has numerous fixes with memory usage. Partitoning might help as long as the partition is defragged but you shouldn't really need to do this as you have 1Gb of RAM. I think you could possibly struggle with your current video card though.
