Windows has decided I can not play civ2

I don't remember giving it the right but it has certainly taken it. It was only one week ago that I was playing civ2 but now 5 minutes in (often less) I get the classic illegal operation crap. I can not think of any programs that I have installed that could possibly effect the running of civ2. All versions suffer from 2.42 to FW and MGE. Needless to say it is most annoying. I would most appreciate help in this matter.

I've gotten messages like that from MS Word too! Something in memory or video gets messed up. A reboot usually clears it, but if it recurs regularly try a reinstall of the program and/or the video driver. One time, though, it was a loose memory chip.
