Windows Update pushed a reboot on me.

This morning at 3 am my computer rebooted. Just now I checked the event log and saw Windows update do stuff like "Windows Update successfully installed update blah blah..."

It did this despite the fact that I had it set to Notify Only. Somehow it got changed to Automatic Installation. Any idea how this happened? Nobody else had access to my computer, and I doubt a malware would want to do that. ;)

I googled "Automatic updates keeps enabling itself" but got XP stuff. I added "vista" somewhere to the google and got stuff about it disabling itself.

Perhaps it was reset with an earlier update? Never heard of anything like that before (at least not for Vista or 7)

Mine did that this morning too.

I think Microsoft's done this once before, when it was supposedly an "emergency." It still pisses me off though.

Mine just did that too, wthout warning, while I was working. That is VERY annoying. I think I'd prefer a virus.

Dude, you should have said. You could have taken the virus I had the other week off me then ;) Had to reinstall everything :(

I had an update install with 'notify only' a couple years ago. So far this week my XP is behaving well though, and waiting for me to respond to its notice.

The only times Auto Update has been automatically switched on for me were when I ran the security check for my old university's internet. It was supposed to check for anti-virus, etc., but also turned on Auto Update without a notice. Fortunately it was a once-per-semester check so I could change the settings right afterwards.

Yeah happened to me too. Nothing to see here folks, just rest assured knowing Microsoft can update your XP at will without you knowing.

You mean Vista.

No I mean XP. That's what I use at least. But if it happened to others on Vista I guess I mean: rest assured knowing Microsoft can update your [insert operating system of choice] at will without you knowing.

Unless it's a non-Microsoft OS. And they'll still probably try. :p

Did this happen to anyone else this morning on Vista? I just remembered it. I remember I got up around 4 or 5 a.m. because the music I play on my computer overnight had turned off and I noticed in the event viewer that it said there was an update done. Then I forgot it until just now.

It is backed up. I just dont like reboots without permission.

I checked and it was set to notify only. I wanted to see if anybody else got an update pushed on them.

Makes sense. You might've paid $300+ dollars for it, but you don't own windows. You merely bought the right to use it until Microsoft decides otherwise. The end user agreement makes it pretty clear that the copy of windows on your computer is their property and they can do whatever the hell they want with it.

Edit: I would also like to point out that the above also applies to some 'other' things you might have stored on your computer. Such as personal information.
