All right I need help on how to route all 4 of my comps together.

Here is some stuff it might help:
1 Laptop with a wirless card
3 desktops
1 desktop that is hooked to our wireless DSL modem
the other 2 are not hooked to the DSL modem but I plan to go wireless with wireless cards

I need to know what wireless cards I need and what is the best of the most inexpensive routers (look in the range of 0 to $250)?

So please help and post links. :goodjob:

If you choose to go with a wireless network, you need to consider how you will have your computers arranged as well as the layout of your house. Those things considered, you could look into getting a Linksys , D-Link, or Netgear router. They are relatively inexpensive ranging from $70 to 80 US. Depending on the functionality of the wireless network card you want, they aren't very expensive either. Are you planning to go totally wireless or will you have a computer wired to the router?

I think you are better off with wired network plus wireless for laptop. you can purchase wireless cable/dsl router that has already 4 wired ports on itself, plus one access point.

I like wireless better, I actually have only had my connection break twice (once only because of spyware) and I've been using it for a pretty long time. I got a Linksys 812.12g IIRC. I think you should go with the same brand in cards and stuff. Setting up cards/network adaptors is easy but routers are a bit of a pain, so read the instructions carefully.

Ok Thanks but someone told me Linksys isn't reliable.

I plan to have the dektop which is the one I am on wired to the router.
Because The DSL modem straight to this one.

Plus all of my comps are about atleast 75 to 120 feet apart.

Ok on to wireless networkcards.

Which one is good and if it is Linksys would you post a link to the review?
I want a network card that can go faster than 10mbps.

Question: I don't need to pay a fee for wireless right? Just the hardware is all I need to pay for.
Correct. You still have to pay for the internet of course, but how you connect to it does not effect this price.

You mean I actually have to pay to connect to the internet via wireless? Ithought it was free.:hmm:

Well it can be free. :mischief:

Legally though, you should use your own network.

To clarify: You would not have to pay any more than you would for a wired network.

Ohh

Do you need a router if you have wireless cards to play LAN games?
That's what this is mainly about.

From what I understand from my two and a half hour research that turned up almost nothing: You need a wired internet connection, you plug your connection cable into the router, the router acts as a home base allowing any computer within range with a card inside use that singal.

I think. Through I wouldn't take my word for it. I couldn't really find anything about the basics of wireless.:crazyeye:

The Router is basically the sender. Think of it like a TV or radio tower. This "Access point" is needed by all WLAN cards. So you will need a Router. But a good router allows not only multiple desktops/laptops to share a connection, it also connects them all, too. Hardware firewall and port blocking features greatly increase your security.

The Router configuration is the whole problem usually.

Most people have problems setting up measures to prevent abuse of or intrusion into their connection. Or simply the issue how to get certain online games running with all these things regarding ports and so on.

I recommend to ask an experienced friend for help to make your network secure.
Other than that, Wireless is not always needed, but often very useful.

Gaming is possible without restriction, not a ms worse ping than with a non-wireless connection, the speed is usually not limited when surfing, as even the lowly 11 MBps cards go 10-5x faster than a usual DSL line.

so do i need a router to play LAN games with just one other comp?

actually you don't you can put the wireless-card into ad-hoc-mode so they will connect directly to each other, but then you won't be able to access the internet or other comps.

to connect your wireless-machines to your router you need a Wireless Access-Point, that connects to your LAN.

and yes, you will still have to pay for your internet-access, since you still need to log in to your provider (assuming you're not hijacking your neighbour's connection)
